Why Arup?

Arup’s award-winning Business and Investor Advisory (BIA) team is one of the largest advisers by deal value in the infrastructure, Telecoms Media & Technology (TMT) and energy markets. Our advice spans the breadth of the project lifecycle, and we work across international markets. Typical projects you would get involved in include commercial and technical advice to infrastructure investors, asset owners, and operators in the telecommunications sector. Our team continues to grow, and we are looking for a Consultant with a broad skillset and an ambition to accelerate their career whilst supporting the growth of our business.

The Role

Joining as a Consultant in the Business & Investor Advisory (BIA) team will give you immediate responsibility and exposure to clients. You will work alongside Arup’s BIA team and technical specialists to help provide investor-focused advice on potential mergers and acquisitions (M&A) of infrastructure assets. As part of the TMT team within BIA, you will focus on working with infrastructure funds who are interested in acquiring infrastructure assets in the Telecom infrastructure sector.

Your role will require you to analyse large amounts of data and information to identify what the material risks and opportunities are, presenting them in a way in which our clients are able to understand the impact on their business plan. This may include for example, identifying capacity restraints in tower networks, opportunities to reduce costs by suggesting maintenance efficiencies, or improvements to the IT and asset management systems and procedures. The job will involve understanding the technical and commercial elements of a business and articulating their impact to a potential investor (who may have limited technical understanding). You will be responsible for leading key sections of the scope including: capex and opex, business plan and operations and maintenance.

Our projects generally last between 4-6 weeks meaning in a year you can work on up to 12 different projects across a variety of assets, giving you exposure to several projects and clients. Our projects are fast-paced and provide you with opportunities to develop quickly whilst gaining a range of experience.

The Opportunity

You will work closely with the wider BIA team as well as technical specialists across Arup globally. Given the nature of the job, you will interact with different stakeholders from the companies and get exposure as to how these businesses are operated whilst also gaining an understanding of what the key drivers are in their business plan.

The role typically requires undertaking site visits to the businesses to conduct visual assessments on the assets as well as discuss the management strategy and potential technical risks, hence, you will be given opportunities to travel within Europe and globally.

Is This Role Right for You?

We are looking for a well-rounded, motivated, and enthusiastic Consultant with strong academic, professional, and personal skills. The role is well suited for someone who has experience performing M&A due diligence in telecom towers, data centre, and / or fibre industries, from a technical perspective. We are however open to candidates from different sector or commercial backgrounds with the relevant transferable skills as well as:

  • Having a willingness to learn - We typically are required to fast understand the drivers of a business and identify where the key risks are.
  • Being adaptable – You will need to be adaptable and flexible as “curve balls” are common in our projects with clients asking challenging questions with short timelines. No two jobs will be the same.
  • Confident – You will be exposed to real responsibility early on in your career and will need to be able to present findings and discuss with clients.
  • Open-minded – The job, and the BIA team in general, is an environment without a rigid structure and allows individuals to pursue whatever career direction they wish. Whilst you will be given support you will have the opportunity to work in several sectors and with different teams.
