With a budget of around £270m, three hospitals and 5,500 staff, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital-based services to the population of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees and parts of East Durham and Sedgefield as well as community, therapeutic and screening to a wider population across Durham and Teesside.

Job Overview

Applications are invited for Consultant Microbiologist to join the Microbiology department at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will become part of a team providing diagnostic services to the clinical specialties within the Trust, General Practitioners and local regional network. The Microbiology laboratory is based at the University Hospital of North Tees.

We have close links with our tertiary referral centres at the Public Health England, Newcastle. The Trust is working collaboratively with other Trusts in the Tees Valley and wider North East, North Cumbria Network to provide sustainable services for the future and is embracing the use of digital technology.

The successful candidate will complement and strengthen the existing team of consultants in a very friendly and forward thinking department with an opportunity to develop a specialist interest.

Main duties of the job

The Applicant will be expected to fulfil a wide range of roles, including antibiotic stewardship and Quality management.

There is also an requirement to participate in the joint on call rota system with South Tees NHS trust.

Applicants must hold FRCPath (or equivalent) and hold specialist registration (candidates within 6 months from specialist registration are also invited to apply). Candidates who can report a broad range of general microbiology and infectious diseases are invited to apply.

Essential Criteria
  • FRCPath or equivalent Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview. If an applicant is UK trained, they must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. If an applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of interpreting and reporting all types of Microbiology specimens and of relating the findings to clinical colleagues Evidence/Knowledge of Continuing Medical Education (existing consultants must demonstrate active participation in CPD)
Desirable criteria
  • Sub speciality interest in and area of Microbiology or Infectious Diseases
