An opportunity has arisen at Dorset County Hospital to appoint an Otolaryngologist to provide general ENT services, with the opportunity that the successful applicant will develop a specialist practice. We are looking for an excellent colleague to join our friendly and well-equipped department. The appointee will be part of a team of 6 consultants (5 of whom provide the on-call service for the area with middle grade and junior cover) delivering care to West and North Dorset and South Somerset.

Applicants should be accredited or eligible for accreditation before taking up the appointment or have received confirmation from the Royal College of Surgeons that the training they have received has been sufficient for them to be regarded as a suitable applicant for a consultant post. Those who are within six months of obtaining their CCST may apply. Non-UK applicants should be on the Specialist Register.

Informal visits by prospective candidates are encouraged and expected.

The ENT Service

Inpatient Lists

ENT Inpatients are admitted to Abbotsbury ward which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

There are beds available in the children’s ward, including an adolescent area, which is adjacent to a

well-equipped 3 theatre suite, shared with ophthalmology and gynaecology.

Day-case Surgery

There are dedicated Day Surgery Units at both Yeovil District Hospital and Dorset County Hospital, with

sessions allocated to ENT use at both hospitals.

Outpatients

There is a dedicated ENT Outpatient Department at Dorset County Hospital, which includes spacious

consulting rooms, treatment room with microscope, rigid and flexible endoscopes, audiometry suite,

paediatric testing room, Hearing Aid Department, hearing therapy, speech therapy and secretarial

staff. The Outpatient Department is shared with the Maxillofacial department. At Yeovil, the ENT

outpatient sessions are held in the Outpatient Department. There is an audiology suite and treatment

room with a microscope. All of the community hospitals have a microscope, endoscopes and an

audiology service.

There is close liaison with colleagues in East Dorset (Poole) and Taunton for patients requiring head and neck resection with reconstruction or radiotherapy.

The ENT department is extremely well supported by our colleagues in Audiology (general audiology and vestibular testing), Speech & Language Therapy, Macmillan Nurses and 2 ENT Nurse Practitioners.

Our outpatients provide general ENT clinics as well as specialised ‘Neck lump’ clinics, Allergy Clinics, Voice clinics and innovative Virtual clinics for hearing loss and tinnitus.
