Communications Associate

Would you like to play a key part in our communication team? We currently have a vacancy for a Communications Associate at our site in Rochester.

As a Communications Associate, you will be responsible for the strategic development and execution of external engagements as well as supporting internal campaigns for the Electronic Systems sector in Rochester, UK. You will build and maintain strong relationships with local media organisations and internal colleagues across Inc. and plc. This role is intended to heighten public awareness and positively influence the perception and reputation of BAE Systems both externally and internally.

This role will provide you with a great overview of communications in BAE Systems and the chance to lead our media and digital content. It will also give you the opportunity to build a career with BAE Systems and work with some of the world’s leading technology.


Your main responsibilities as a Communications Associate will involve:

  • Managing the site’s local media outreach strategy, identifying story angles and relevant audiences
  • Managing all media inquiries related to the site’s early careers programs
  • Identifying people- and technology-focused news from across the business and write engaging and informative articles for external communications channels
  • Producing content for use on the company’s corporate social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube)
  • Assisting the head of communications with positive media engagements in relation to products and capabilities
  • Supporting the planning and execution of internal and external events, working with the local marketing and internal communications leads
  • Developing materials using Adobe professional creative software to support strategic internal communications
  • Designing and overseeing implementation of branded and approved templates for functional hubs and homepages on the refreshed intranet (SharePoint 2016)

Your skills and qualifications:

  • Ideally educated to degree standard with a relevant subject i.e. Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or Communications
  • Experience writing/editing/pitching press relases and stories to media
  • Experience with social media/digital communications (writing content to be used through these channels)
  • Experience developing creative communications materials to support strategic internal communications campaigns
  • Experience of using digital tools

What we’re looking for in you:

You will have excellent oral and written communication skills, along with excellent interpersonal skills. You will be highly organised, detailed orientated and able to work independently or as a collaborative group member. You will be a self-starter who exhibits passion for their work, with an understanding and appreciation of social/digital media. You will be a quick learner, adaptable and flexible and will be able to learn to appreciate the nuances of communicating in the technology and defence industries.

Salary:£23,000 - £25,000
