Job Title: Chief Engineer
Location: Wilmslow/Remote
Hours of work: 09:00 - 17:30 or in line with business needs
Salary: £80-90k

The Role

As we embark on our digital transformation journey, we require great leadership to work across The Citation Group, providing deep technical guidance on existing and emerging technologies that will drive forward our vision and strategy as we look ahead.

As the Chief Engineer for the group, you will play a key role in providing technical guidance across all tech teams within Citation. Being able to work at a team level but also holistically at a group level. We are looking for a talented Chief Engineer to help build great applications and services, working closely with Software Engineers and Designers across multiple areas and technologies to create an ecosystem that is consistent, highly usable, reliable, and performant with systems thinking at the forefront.

You will have excellent stakeholder management skills and be great at building those working relationships whilst influencing mindsets. You will have mastery of several programming languages and a deep level of ops/cloud knowledge using AWS/Azure or GCP. Being able to deep dive to evaluate both existing and new tech will be pivotal as you work at group level to bring together tech teams in the group.

You will provide technical leadership and help guide the organisation on its transformation journey. To do this you will use your knowledge and experience of various technologies both from a software and cloud/infrastructure perspective with a system thinking mindset.

You will work closely with other leaders to focus on understanding the needs of our colleagues and stakeholders and will help them to deliver value by assessing technology choices and providing guidance.

Work with teams, including individuals who are new to good Engineering practices and DevOps concepts, building technical capability within teams and individuals while helping them mature in a DevOps culture.

Demonstrate the value of good engineering practices in driving agility, such as continuous delivery, continuous integration, TDD, BDD, and mob programming.

Help create a culture of psychology safety, feedback, and retrospectives to bring about measurable improvements in technical capability, using useful metrics to support continuous improvement such as DORA metrics.

Understand The Citation Group’s vision and strategy ensuring technology choices and direction fit into wider priorities - actively contributing to and helping to drive forward the engineering practice.

Desired Experience/Skills

• Demonstrable experience of new technologies and know when it is appropriate to use them.
• Deep understanding and experience of both architecture and infrastructure and why it is important to be aware of both as well as and the benefits of taking a microservices approach to development.
• Deep understanding and experience of OO design, SOLID, Event-Driven architecture alongside experience of TDD, BDD, and mob programming.
• Demonstrable experience of various technologies (not all) and tools such as GIT, Jenkins, GoCD, MySQL, Postgres, Go, Node.js, Java, Scala, PHP, .Net, Apache, Nginx, Docker, Kubernetes to name a few.
• Good understanding and experience of framework-agnostic development, knowing when to use frameworks and when not to alongside caching technologies.
• Cross-domain expert who can solve complex and critical issues.
• Excellent people skills including stakeholder engagement, along with strong judgement and decision-making capability.
• Good commercial understanding, able to identify and deploy different approaches to facilitate business success.
• Strong focus on continuous improvement and comfortable challenging the status quo and enabling change.
• Able to motivate and lead others as a servant leader working across the Citation Group.
