Job content

Support worker for clients at this unique setting: an animal sanctuary and care farm with a small college and SEN school on site. Work with animals all day, guiding a young person through animal care tasks.

Most of our clients are additional needs children finding school a struggle. We provide a nurturing environment that enables them to build confidence, self-esteem, communication and work-based skills. They range in age from 6 to 16. We occasionally have adult clients too. Some clients are working towards achieving a level 1, 2 or 3 practical animal care qualification.

Our animals include livestock, equines, exotics and small animals. Clients perform real tasks and a support worker must lead by example, therefore the role is physically demanding: mucking out stables and general yard duties; handling horses, ponies and donkeys; pigs and goats; exercising dogs; caring for raccoons, coati, fox and wallabies; maintaining accommodation and paddocks, creating enrichment, etc.

A nurturing, sunny and fun disposition is vital, as is a commitment to high welfare and positive, force- free animal management.

The job is mainly outdoors, in all weathers. You must be capable of guiding and supporting both young and adult clients and keeping them safe both directly and indirectly. A love for animals and an understanding of additional needs are both essential.

You must be able to communicate effectively and work as part of a team, as well as show initiative and independence when planning the day for your designated client. Building a positive, fun working relationship with them is key. Managing challenging behaviour and making the farm a welcoming, understanding and inclusive place to be for all is part of our ethos.

You must engage fully with training on all aspects of the role, from safeguarding to animal management.

The role is flexible shift work between the hours of 9 and 3, in term time. Total hours per week can vary. We are happy to accommodate your preferred working days.

We ask employees for exemplary attendance to give our service users the continuity and consistency they need and to allow a strong, positive working relationship to build between you and the child you are supporting.
