We’re looking for a brilliant Building Inspector

Would you like to join the UK’s leading warranty and insurance provider for newly-built homes and be at the very heart of our core purpose to build confidence in construction quality for the benefit of the industry and new home buyers?

We’ve been setting the standards in new home construction for more than 80 years and we’re now looking to expand our team with people who share our passion for quality. You’ll be joining at an exciting time as we extend our use of technology and develop closer partnerships with our customers to prevent construction defects.

If you’re an ambitious, committed individual, with a strong desire to make a difference, you could be the perfect fit to join our inspection team as a Building Inspector in the Blackburn area.

Your day-to-day job

Based from home but out and about every day, you’ll be working with our registered builders to ensure that the new homes they are building meet the NHBC Standards, Building Regulations and other relevant legislation. You will have the opportunity to build excellent working relationships with the site managers on your patch, working with them to identify and prevent construction defects. It’s an important job, helping us to manage our insurance risk and to create the very best homes for new home buyers.

You can expect full training and the ongoing support of your line manager and wider team. You’ll have control of your own diary and the autonomy to do the job as you think best. Your working day will start when you leave home (not when you arrive at your first call) and we won’t ask you to work weekends because we believe a good work/life balance is essential.

Key elements of the role include:

  • providing technical expertise, advice and guidance on construction
  • inspecting homes at key stages of construction in response to requests from builders
  • recording and reporting the results of your inspections
  • assessing sites for the NHBC Pride in the Job competition
  • assessing the technical competence of builders applying for registration with us.

The qualities and skills we’re looking for

We’re looking for committed, ambitious individuals with a keen eye for detail who share our passion for quality construction. You’ll be personable, able to build and sustain effective working relationships with your customers. You’ll also have the technical know-how to be credible, provide guidance where its needed and be assertive enough to stand your ground if you discover something that needs to be addressed.

You’ll need:

  • house building or construction experience and/or a construction related qualification such as City and Guilds, HNC, HND or NVQ (or equivalent)
  • full driving licence
  • reasonable fitness for daily visits to construction sites, inspecting new homes at all stages of their construction, including frequently working at height.

Your salary and benefits

Salary and bonus: Your salary will be in the range of £32,374 to £35,780 p/a dependent on experience. Our annual bonus scheme rewards our strongest performers with the highest bonuses and, subject to the company’s performance and your own, you could earn up to 6% annual bonus. NHBC also offers a Remote Workers Allowance to the value of £2,200 annually.

Company car: We’ll provide you with a company car. We’re bringing on more electric and hybrid cars to our fleet so you’ll pay less tax and we can continue improving our environmental impact.

Pension: Our pension contributions are generous and, depending on your own level of monthly contributions, we will contribute up to 10.5% of your pensionable salary each year.

Holiday: We offer 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays with the option to purchase an extra week per year.
