About the Role

The School of Education at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Associate Professor in Psychology & Education. We welcome applications from those with research and teaching interests in the broad field of educational psychology and /or subfield(s) of psychology as relevant to education, and we are particularly eager to hear from applicants with a focus on how individuals learn and/or perform. Associate Professors in Psychology & Education

Applicants must demonstrate research excellence in the field of psychology related to education with the ability to teach our students to an exceptional standard and to fully engage in the services, citizenship and values of the University. As an Associate Professor, you would be expected to:

  • Pursue research that is internationally excellent, with some work that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour;
  • Make a significant contribution to the development of successful research projects/ fellowship proposals in pursuit of suitable national and international funding opportunities to support research and end-user engagement.
  • Enhance the quality of the research environment in the School, the wider University and beyond, by supporting, establishing and leading School of Education research groups and promoting and disseminating research within and beyond the University, and engaging in the mentoring of early career researchers;
  • Attract and provide excellent supervision to research students, and enhance the School’s commitment to its vibrant and international postgraduate culture.
  • Contribute to the thematic cluster Psychology and Education in terms of research, teaching and governance.

Applicants must demonstrate research excellence in psychological research related to education, with the ability to teach our students to an exceptional standard and to fully engage in the services, citizenship and values of the University.

Research

Candidates must demonstrate a major contribution to their research field with impact beyond their own institution with outputs consistently recognised as internationally excellent, with some outputs either being world class or the candidate having the potential to achieve world-class.

Essential Research Criteria

  • Qualifications - a good first degree and a PhD in psychology or a related subject.
  • Outputs – significant evidence of internationally excellent research outputs, some of which are evaluated as world class. Candidates are asked to submit four research papers with their application (as outlined in the How to Apply section below). Candidates may additionally choose to submit evidence such as external peer review of their outputs.
  • Personal Research Plan - evidence of a personal research plan which supports and enhances the School’s research strategy must be included, identifying ongoing activity and future short term and longer term plans.

Teaching

Candidates must make a significant contribution to the development and delivery of high-quality teaching with demonstrable contribution to the design of excellent learning environments and curricula, including curriculum development, which enables students to achieve their potential.

Essential Teaching Criteria

  • Quality - making a significant contribution to the development and delivery of high-quality teaching at a nationally-recognised competitive level.   • Innovation – evidence of successful new programme development and innovations in the teaching methods for the design / delivery of high quality teaching at a nationally competitive level including lectures, small group learning and/or using technology or other techniques to enhance learning and/or assessment.
  • Strategic – Significant contribution to the design and delivery of excellent teaching activities and the creation of learning environments that enable students to achieve their potential.

Significant contribution to the development of successful research project / fellowship proposals.   • PhD Supervision – the successful recruitment and excellent supervision of PhD students.
  • Research Impact - evidence of a significant contribution to the development of research that has a demonstrable impact beyond the Candidate’s institution.

Next Steps
