The team


KPMG’s Infrastructure and Government Strategic Advisory Services (SAS) team is building a cost optimisation capability and looking at hiring a number of exceptional candidates, across grades in our London-based team. The team needs a diversity of talented individuals who have a passion for identifying, creating and delivering innovative solutions which help our public and private clients to drive sustainable reduction in their operating and capital cost, while maintaining delivery of key business outcomes.

The SAS team works with C-suite level executives across government, arms-length bodies and industry on the biggest most complex strategic, financial, business and operating model issues. We work with leaders in the public sector and industry partners to design and implement solutions which enable delivery of government policy, this covering the delivery of major new infrastructure or government services to citizens. We are building on these relationships and extending our support to these clients by enabling them to establish effective and cost efficient operating models.

It is an exciting time to join the team, we are working on some fascinating public issues including: Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) implications for the public sector and its partners; the future structure of the rail sector, the implications from the rise of electric and autonomous vehicles, and how to deliver some of the largest most complex infrastructure programmes in the UK. The addition of cost optimisation capability to this portfolio enables us to broaden and deepen our strong relationships across government and infrastructure clients.


The role

We are seeking an Associate Director to play a leading role in development and growth of our Cost Optimisation proposition. The individual should have a strong track record of leading cost transformation programmes and ideally sales experience in this area.

To be a successful Associate Director, applicants will be expected to:


Lead engagements

  • Have responsibility for managing a number of (potentially concurrent) engagements and teams
  • Lead the design and delivery of cost optimisation engagements (e.g. complex storyboarding, issue identification, overall problem-solving and recommendation development)
  • Be comfortable handling ambiguity and changing client demands
  • Complete and take responsibility for KPMG’s ‘Engagement Management’ procedures (e.g. managing scope within budget and timetable)

Developing our people

  • Lead diverse teams to bring a variety of perspectives and insights to clients and share experience across the team
  • Inspire, motivate, coach and develop project team members and give constructive upwards feedback
  • Manage junior colleagues, coach and support their career development
  • As a leader, contribute to the development of our team and ways of working

Building our business and proposition

  • Support development of our cost optimisation proposition for our target clients, coordination other members of the team
  • Working as part of the leadership team to build and maintain a pipeline of business development opportunities which align with the team business plan
  • Work with other parts of KPMG to win work aligned with our strategy, in particular working with cost optimisation colleagues targeting adjacent markets
  • Build deep client relationships in key markets and be seen as the ‘go to’ person and a trusted adviser by client senior executives
  • Proactively develop thought leadership

The Person

We are looking for a person with in-depth expertise in cost optimisation and experience in delivering consulting work. The desirable skills, experience and qualifications include:

  • Worked for a strategy house, big 4 firm, or central strategy / corporate development team, with experience of leading complex projects with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience in leading cost transformations and efficiency programmes for infrastructure and public sectors
  • Experience of delivering operational strategy or cost reduction projects (e.g. operating model design, performance benchmarking, Zero Basing analysis, Lean Six Sigma)
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with ability to build client relationships, identifying potential client engagements and sell-on opportunities
  • Leading and developing high performing, inclusive and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Structured problem-solving and analytical capabilities
  • Evaluation of complex challenges and deliver insightful, practicable recommendations
  • The ability to adapt quickly in changing circumstances
  • Strong numerical capabilities combined with sound commercial acumen
