The role

As a Assistant Health Physicist, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. At Rosyth Dockyard we are leading the world in the dismantling of nuclear submarines. We have a staged approach to dismantling, which starts with the removal of low-level radioactive waste, then moves onto the removal of the nuclear reactor and finally into the recycling of the remaining vessel. No-one in the world has done this before and we offer the opportunity to join our ground-breaking team.

Day to day, you’ll be working within our team of Radiation Protection and Radioactive Waste professionals as part of the Submarine Dismantling Project, providing input and guidance on day-to-day issues, input to projects and gaining hands-on experience on a unique project.

As a Assistant Health Physicist, you will support the following areas;
  • Demonstrating compliance with relevant radiation safety and radioactive waste regulations
  • Developing and implementing radiation protection / radioactive waste policies and procedures
  • Development and review of radiation protection systems and radioactive waste arrangements
  • Liaison with management and the workforce (including plant managers, designers and engineers) on matters of radiation safety and radioactive waste
  • Assessment of radiation risks in the workplace and providing advice on the design of plant, equipment and waste disposal to ensure safety
  • Advice on the safe transport of radioactive materials
  • Liaison with regulators and other bodies.

At Rosyth, we work a 37-hour week and do this on a hybrid basis, we would ideally be looking for someone to join us threee days per week onsite, and work the other two days from home. We are open to flexible working patterns.

Essential Experience of the Assistant Health Physicist:
  • Knowledge and experience of the regulations, codes, standards, licenses and permits relating to Radiation Protection.

Qualifications of the Assistant Health Physicist:
  • Degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline, ideally with post graduate qualifications in a Radiological Safety subject.
  • Hold, or be willing to gain an associate membership of the Society for Radiological Protection

The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
