JOB TITLE: WOODWORK SUPPORT WORKERHOURS: FULL-TIME (37.5 HOURS PER WEEK)

RESPONSIBLE TO: PROJECT MANAGER
JOB PURPOSE
Working in a department within our Day and Employment Services you will work with people who have expressed an interest in woodwork or DIY, supporting them to learn, practise or maintain their skills. In addition, you will introduce people to a wider range of woodcrafts, encouraging them to undertake in-house courses and work towards employment where appropriate. You will also assist in generating income through the production and sale of woodworked items both internally and externally to ensure the financial viability of the department.
AREA OF INVOLVEMENT
Working in a woodworking department, within a wider service that provides Day and Employment Services for people with mental health issues and/or learning disabilities. Assisting in the provision of support and training to enable people who may have mental health needs or who may be currently unemployed to gain skills, knowledge and confidence. To promote their independence and well-being, supporting them to obtain or regain the skills to return to work should they choose. To work in partnership with others within the charity to find new ways of supporting individuals and increasing the range of opportunities available to them.
Knowledge, Skills And Experience Required
- Experience in woodwork and design (essential)
- An enjoyment of woodwork and DIY (essential)
- The ability to work alone (essential)
- The ability to work as part of a team (essential)
- A willingness to be flexible (essential)
- Patience and a polite attitude towards others (essential)
- A track record of good customer interface skills (preferable)
- Good spoken and written communication skills (essential)
- A reasonable level of fitness (essential)
- The ability to complete record sheets and paperwork (essential)
- A willingness to undertake further training in health & social care as well as trade specific training (essential)
- A non-judgmental approach to working with people who may experience mental distress (essential)
- To be able to support and encourage others to develop their own skills (essential)
- Full driving licence (essential) including category D1 minibus (preferable)
To work within an already established team, but also to work as part of a number of teams
To work in collaboration with other professionals ensuring good lines of communication, both written and verbal, thus ensuring a multi-professional concept of support is delivered to people who use our services
To communicate effectively with users and carers in promoting an awareness of their individualised action plans
To work with trade customers. To communicate with and serve members of the public as appropriate
KEY RESULT AREAS
- Assist in devising individual support and training plans for people within your department
- Developing the self-esteem and confidence of people within your department
- Encouraging, enabling and supporting people within your department to follow the internal training programme
- Supporting people within your department to explore employment opportunities
- Be responsible for maintaining a safe working environment
- Be responsible for promoting and maintaining safe working practices
- Take a proactive approach to ensuring the maintenance of the equipment and tools used in the delivery of our services
- Be responsible for overseeing the department in the absence of the Supervisor
- Supporting other members of staff in providing advice, guidance and support to people who experience mental ill health, who attend Blyth Star Enterprises or its partners as either a day service or an employment training placement
- Participating in planning and review meetings with Care Managers or other official representatives of funding agencies as appropriate
- Dealing appropriately with customers and members of the public
- Taking responsibility for the health and safety of areas in which you work and the activities that are carried out in them, adhering to all statutory requirements e.g. Health & Safety, COSHH and policies of Blyth Star Enterprises
- Participating in the planning and development of services within Blyth Star Enterprises and its Partners
- Undertaking training as agreed within your supervisions
- Participating in a formal appraisal system
- Always acting as an ambassador for Blyth Star Enterprises and its Partners
Assisting in the delivery of a progressive service that is unique in its approach to meeting the needs of people with enduring mental health problems
Maintaining the balance between support/training and production
Maintaining a positive approach and acting as a role model at all times
Adapting to a constantly changing working environment
