Local Unit & Position Description:
DNV Energy Systems is looking for an engineer in the early stage of their career or with some experience to join our Turbine Engineering Section in Bristol, UK as a Wind Turbine Loads and Control Engineer.

The Turbine Engineering Section (within the Offshore Technology Department of DNV Energy Systems) has a long history of loads analysis and Control design for wind turbines, dating back to the early days of the wind industry. Our section consists of over 30 engineers delivering engineering consultancy services in the areas of onshore & offshore loads analysis, control system design, mechanical/structural design of wind turbines and their foundations, life extension, wind farm control and cost of energy analysis. The main customers are turbine manufacturers, wind farm developers, owners and operators, as well as offshore support structure designers.

As a Wind Turbine Loads and Control Engineer, you’ll get the opportunity to work on Loads and Control algorithm design and analysis of wind turbines. The focus of this work would be based around numerical modelling of the full wind turbine system, simulation of load cases, analysis and interpretation of results and verification/validation of models as well as application of classical and advanced control algorithms to commercial scale machines. Other activities could include review of customers’ methodologies and designs and delivering training.

There are also many other interesting and varied activities within the department that you may be asked to participate in, including research and development, software tool development, floating loads analysis and life extension.

The role will involve international (typically European) travel: 1-2 trips per year of 2-3 days (for customer meetings, training sessions, etc.) would normally be expected, although clearly this is currently subject to disruption due to COVID, with many activities happening remotely.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform numerical modelling, loads analysis and control design of wind turbine systems
  • Support loads analysis projects for other types of jobs, including those relating to onshore and offshore wind
  • Manage projects, delivering on-time and on-budget to the customer’s satisfaction. This will include regular communication with the customer as well as internal stakeholders
  • Investigate novel modelling and analysis solutions in response to customer needs and industry trends
  • Support business development activities by, for example, talking to potential customers, preparing commercial proposals and providing thought leadership in the form of conference papers, seminars, blogs / online articles, etc.
Position Qualifications:
To qualify we need you to have:
  • At least a Masters’ degree in a related engineering or numerical field or equivalent qualification
  • Good understanding of aerodynamic loads, structural dynamics and general mechanical engineering concepts
  • Competent with classical & advanced control design theory with application within the time and frequency domain
  • Good programming skills (C++, Matlab and Python)
  • Fluent command of English in writing and in speech

Traits we value:
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written). Ability to collaborate effectively with others, share knowledge, experience and information and support others in pursuit of team goals.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to thrive in a demanding but rewarding consultancy environment - ability to deliver for customers whilst working to deadlines and budgets as well as managing competing demands on your time.
  • An aptitude for innovative thinking, paired with a solution-driven mind-set
  • Passion for renewable energy and an interest in wind turbine system design
