Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) designs, manufactures and supports world leading military vehicles. The business is currently preparing for an exciting period of growth ahead of key armoured vehicle programmes for the UK MOD. The team you join will be responsible for the manufacture of the Boxer (MIV) vehicle for the UK MOD.

This role reports to the Production Manager and you will be responsible for the supervision of 10 to 15 Welding Technicians. The Team will be responsible for the manufacture of welded structures and components to the relevant quality and accreditation standards. As Team Leader you will ensure a safe working environment and resolve any issues and performance matters that may arise. This role is pivotal to the long-term achievement of manufacturing schedules and provision of cost targets through the delivery of continuous improvement and lean activities.

In addition to the core skills and competences you bring to the production team, all Team Leaders will undergo training at Rheinmetall’s facilities in Germany to achieve the DIN 2303 Q3 qualification - the approved welding qualification required for armoured vehicles. You will be required to undertake ’On The Job’ training at the Rheinmetall Kassel facility in Germany for a (non-continuous) period of up to approx. 6 months. This requires periodic travel to Germany within the first year of employment.

The above will provide the individual with the opportunity to see and be part of Boxer vehicle manufacture first hand, whilst enjoying a rewards package.


Position Key Duties and Responsibilities:-
  • Manage all aspects of people management, including day to day responsibility of Teams’ performance management and development, to include attendance, sickness, overtime approvals, training (where appropriate), PDP’s (Personal Development Plans), and behavioural and conduct related issues.
  • Support the Production Manager MIV in achieving production KPI’s (e.g. Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery & People) targets and actively participate with continuous improvement activities (e.g. production efficiency, operating cost reduction, safety, PPS & 5S).
  • Accountable for all aspects of Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery and People targets within your area of responsibility.
  • Allocate work to the Team at the start of shift and communicate issues, progress and achievements at an end of shift meeting.
  • Escalate issues and disruption to the Production Manager in a timely manner.
  • Encourage the Team to submit improvement ideas to increase engagement and efficiency.
  • Provide inputs to the wider MIV production team (e.g. Welding Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Production Planning, Logistics and Quality) as required.
  • Support defect investigation and promote continuous improvement ideas, i.e. 5S, practical problem solving, Kaizen tools to improve processes and reduce waste.
  • Other duties and responsibilities that may be required as determined by your manager from time to time.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS YOU SHOULD HAVE

Essential:

  • NVQ Level 3 qualification Engineering/Welding Apprenticeship (or equivalent qualification).
  • Minimum 3 years of Leadership experience in Engineering/Manufacturing bias, or assembly experience working within an engineering or production environment in a similar industry.
  • Qualified to ISO 9606-1 Qualification testing of welders - Fusion welding - Part 1: Steels.
  • At least 3 year’s welding experience, working autonomously, fabricating welded steel assemblies in a manufacturing environment.
  • Qualified with the use MIG/MAG and TIG (desirable) welding systems including working with HS Steels.
  • Understanding of complete welding fabrication of major assemblies, welding processes and equipment, materials and their behaviour during welding, relationships between the structure of materials, resultant properties and stress aspects.
  • Be able to read and interpret technical drawings to understand specifications, tolerances and required materials to carry out the task.
  • UK MOD ‘SC’ security clearance needed (If no SC yet, RBSL will sponsor application). Candidate must declare any known concerns that they may have in achieving security clearance in their application.
  • Good communication skills & the ability to lead a high performing team through training, mentoring and the transfer of knowledge.
  • Motivated and disciplined with an excellent work ethic, technical aptitude, continuous improvement mind-set and can demonstrate good attention to detail.
  • Due to the ’on the job training’ element of this role, successful candidates should be able to meet the entry requirements for Covid-19 entrance into Germany.

Desirable / advantageous:

  • Experience with non-destructive testing techniques including mechanical and visual inspection techniques, dye penetration, magnetic particle and radiographic testing.
  • Experience in working in the fabrication of military or similar heavy high integrity welded products.
  • General knowledge of SAP.
