Our Volunteer Telephone Befrienders help improve the quality of life older people who are socially isolated and may feel lonely. Our befrienders are introduced to a member with the purpose of them ringing up once a week to have a chat for about half an hour to help the person feel less isolated. The aim of our befriending schemes are to reduce isolation and where possible support and encourage the member to access services and facilities within the community they live in.
  • Good listening skills
  • Patience, empathy and understanding of the needs of older people
  • Ability to keep records of calls made
  • You will be reliable and punctual
  • You will be able to be flexible
  • You will have a clear sense of personal boundaries
  • You have the ability to provide a supportive and non-judgemental service
  • You’ll be willing to engage with training and development
  • You will have a good understanding of personal strengths and limitations
  • You’ll be able to maintain confidentiality
  • We will provide you with a full induction for the role
  • Training on safeguarding, health and safety and other training and updating of skills and knowledge relevant to the role as appropriate
  • Ongoing support from a named contact
  • Out of pocket expenses in accordance with MHA’s Expenses Policy
