Are you passionate about social mobility and excited about shaping the future of a growing charity? Join us to use your leadership to impact the lives of hundreds of disadvantaged students.

What will you be doing?

Insight Outreach is seeking new Trustees to support the growth of our charity. We need fresh perspectives to support us on our journey.

As Trustee, what will your roles and responsibilitiesbe?
  • Attend quarterly board meetings, and monthly meetings with Trustees
  • Own and develop elements of the strategic growth plan for the charity, depending on your skills and interests. Examples include
    • Building relationships with other organisations to develop new partnerships
    • Drive our corporate sponsorship strategy
    • Spearhead our fundraising campaign
    • Improving internal operational processes to support our programme delivery
You will be working closely with the other trustees, our operational volunteers, other organisations that we are hoping to build partnerships with, our student volunteers and interns and our beneficiaries.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for people with any of the following skills, experiences, or interests
  • Passionate about social mobility, fair access to educational opportunities, and creating a thriving, equal society where a young person’s future reflects their talent and not their background.
  • Awareness of experience of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds applying to and studying at top universities, either first hand or through previous work/volunteering experience.
  • Firsthand knowledge or experience mentoring in an educational or career setting and appreciation of its power to develop and transform young people.
  • Track record of success in supporting either charitable or non-charitable organisations to grow, including developing business strategy, supporting with building partnerships, developing corporate sponsorship or writing grant funding applications
  • Ability to solve complex problems and formulate policy, drawing upon excellent interpersonal skills, lateral thinking and empathy.
In addition, eitherof the following would be desirable, but not essential
  • Legal and/or compliance skills gained as a qualified solicitor or barrister or working in risk, compliance and similar functions. Knowledge of charity law is not essential.
  • Experience in the education sector, as a teacher, mentor to young people, working at a university or another education charity.
  • Experience on the operational side of an educational organisation, school, university or charity
  • Experience of statistical methods and impact evaluation
What difference will you make?

In the first year (2018) of the OMS, 38% of our students who applied to Oxbridge secured an offer. In 2019, this rose to 40%. This is almost twice as much as the national average (21%) for our community of interest. We want to utilise our growing platform to extend our reach into the most deprived UK communities. We then want to triple the number of young people on our programme, from 60 to 180 by 2024. Finally, we want to develop forums to support our OMS alumni during university, building a flourishing community of ambassadors who we can continue to provide advice and support to secure top jobs upon graduation.

In 2020, we offered unpaid internships to eight of our past OMS students, who helped to develop all aspects of our charity. We want to offer 8 paid full-time internships each year in the future, providing invaluable work experience and professional mentoring to enable our alumni to secure the jobs they deserve, without any financial barriers.

Furthermore, we want to actively drive a ripple effect within our communities of interest. Once at university, we encourage our alumni to mentor on our programme, providing them with valuable personal development opportunities as well as connecting our alumni back into our communities. We also want to form lasting links with schools so that we can continue to work with students who need our support. We hope that we can train schools in our methods, allowing them to support their own students without our intervention. This will maximize the use of our limited resources and enable us to sustainably build a community dedicated to creating a more equitable society.

What’s in it for the volunteer?
  • The opportunity to apply your leadership skills to shape the future of a growing charity
  • Being able to directly impact the lives of young people from disadvantaged, by engaging with our students at our events
  • Working with a passionate team of volunteers, including many young people, students and past beneficiaries who are committed to the cause
