Our lively Trust is working to complete the major project of producing the full detailed history of Wiltshire in 25 volumes. Join us as our secretary to advise on governance, manage our website and develop our Friends organisation.

What will you be doing?

Our task is to raise funds and then spend that money commissioning professional historians to research and write the detailed local history of Wiltshire under our supervision so far we have published 18 volumes out of an eventual 25, and there are three more in preparation. Our new secretary will not necessarily be expected to minute meetings but will keep an eye on governance issues and advise appropriately. She or he will also oversee our new website - wiltshirehistory.org - to ensure it stays lively and up to date our website manager makes the changes on the site. We also have a Friends organisation as part of our fund-raising efforts and our new secretary will be asked to work with other trustees to develop that so that it is effective in maximising our support.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who is comfortable getting to grips with governance issues, though they need not have any prior knowledge of these. They need to have a reasonable eye for the website design, though they will not be asked to make changes to the website themselves. They will be happy at expressing themselves in written English and will be comfortable working with other trustees on new ideas for fund-raising and for increasing our support.

We hope that our new secretary will have a considerable interest in English local history.

What difference will you make?

Our new secretary can expect to make a difference in three key ways
  • By ensuring that we abide by the various governance rules and regulations and so avoid any problems with the management of the trust.
  • By ensuring that our website stays lively and relevant, and so helps to maximise support for our work.
  • By working to support our Friends organisation, thereby helping to maximise our income and so ensuring that we complete each volume of the Wiltshire Victoria County History as quickly as possible.
What’s in it for the volunteer?

Our new secretary can expect firstly to have fulfilling work in helping our organisation to be truly effective, and secondly to have the satisfaction of seeing the production of each volume of the Wiltshire Victoria County History, the bedrock of all local history research.
