Statistically 1 in 6 people have a hearing problem Sound Advice Cumbria, a charity, is a drop-in centre for the hard of hearing that operates from Age UK Resource Centre, Sandgate, Penrith. The only alternatives to Sound Advice are the Audiology departments at The Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal or the North Cumbria University Hospital in Carlisle. We exchange old batteries for new, re-tube hearing aids and give advice on their use. We also offer advice on equipment: amplifiers, doorbells, and telephones. Currently there is a pool of around 12 volunteers who staff the centre: ideally we would like another 6 volunteers to spread the workload. There are always 2 volunteers at each session, which last around 2 to 3 hours. The volunteer will attend on a rota of at least 2 times a month on a Thursday or Friday, giving out NHS batteries and retubes (training will be given) and also advice.

Just someone who has a few hours to spare each month with a pleasant manner especially with elderly people who are the bulk of our clients.

There are rarely any expenses but they will be reimbursed if there is. The centre is based in Penrith by the bus station and car park so easy to get to by transport.
