As a Library Volunteer you can get the chance to do anything and everything! You can gain practical experience of working in a library. All the 24 Kirklees libraries really need the support of volunteers, you could be shelving books, helping pick requested books from the shelves, supporting someone using the PCs or helping someone use the self-issue machines. You will help by:-
  • Sorting the items on the returns trolley prior to returning them to the shelves.
  • Creating attractive displays
  • Returning books to shelves in the correct order; keeping the shelves tidy and the books in order.
  • Pulling together stock from booklists to fulfil customer requests
  • Helping customers to borrow or return books using the self-service machines
  • Troubleshooting and supporting customers with their IT queries
  • Helping customers to perform searches and access particular websites on our PCs to find the information they want
  • Helping customers with formatting, printing and other specific tasks on the public computers as required
  • Discussing and recording the impact that the library service makes on customers’ lives
You will :
  • Be a good communicator
  • Enjoy meeting people
  • Are enthusiastic and friendly
  • Are physically fit and able to lift, bend and kneel
  • You will need two referees to provide a character reference. This could be an employer, teacher, support worker etc.
  • An induction to the service and appropriate training will be provided
  • The time commitment could be delivering weekly sessions as necessary
  • Travel expenses can be claimed if required to attend training sessions
  • You can select the library within which you would like to volunteer and this may be more than one
