Dartmouth Castle is one of the most beautifully sited fortresses in England, offering stunning view across the estuary and out to sea. The site is a fantastic family day out, in all weathers. Berry Pomeroy Castle is one of the last true castles built in England, consisting of both the original castle defences and the ruins of a later Elizabethan and Jacobean country house. Totnes Castle plays an integral role in both the history of castle building in Britain and in the history of the Norman Conquest. As a volunteer, you will help us bring each of the Castles to life by welcoming all our visitors and providing information on the castle’s history and the surrounding areas. You will also help us to engage the local community and encourage people to visit the Castle. This role offers the opportunity to volunteer across any or all of the sites.

We are looking for confident, effective communicators who will be friendly and approachable to all visitors. This role is all about people; encouraging people to visit the site, helping people make the most out of their visit and promoting repeat visits and visits to other nearby English Heritage sites:
  • Welcoming visitors, providing way-finding information and ensuring they see the whole of the site
  • Engaging with visitors, providing information about the history of the Castle’s, answering questions and sharing knowledge of the surrounding area and local wildlife
  • Encouraging people to visit us by engaging with the local community and local businesses.
Volunteers in this role will have to stand for long periods/walk the site and will have to spend time outside.
