Winchester Mediation Service is a small local charity providing a Neighbourhood Service. The role is ideal for someone with limited time available but wanting to perform a useful role in the community.

What will you be doing?

are looking for a Trustee to serve on our Executive Committee, which meets 8 times a year. with legal knowledge and experience who will act as Company Secretary. Trustees will attend strategy days, AGM, training events and will promote the charity locally. There is also a need to contribute in their specialist area,

The specifics of the role are

The role of the Secretary is to support the Chair by ensuring the smooth functioning of the board. Tasks will include the following -

Preparation of agendas for Chair’s approval, consulting other Trustees as necessary. Ensure that agendas and accompanying papers are circulated in good time and not less than five days ahead of the meeting date.

Attend meetings, take notes and prepare minutes for Chair’s approval. Ensure that minutes are circulated as soon as possible after each meeting.

Act as correspondent with Charity Commission and ensure all documents are submitted in a timely manner

  • To ensure the charity’s funds and income are properly managed
  • To assist in the appointment of any voluntary or paid appointments.
  • To be responsible for the public relations and promotion of the organisation
  • To ensure that the organisation meets its obligations in respect of Health and Safety,
  • Safeguarding and Data Protection and that policies and procedures are adhered to.
    To be involved in writing and updating policies, scrutinising Executive papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues
    To provide advice and guidance on issues in which the trustee has special expertise
  • To attend and participate in periodic strategy away days
  • To attend relevant training and development events

  • What are we looking for?

    The position of Trustees is essential to give support to our voluntary mediators and to be responsible with others for the management and governance of the organisation advising on legal issues. We are looking for people who will help to develop the Service. Experience in mediation is not essential.

    We are particularly urgently looking for trustees with a financial background as our treasurer is planning to stand down in the future, business development, PR, HR and social media.

    What difference will you make?

    to ten The Executive meets around eight times a year and is responsible for the charity’s vision; for leading its strategic direction, for compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and for performance and quality. It is also responsible for the charity’s financial management and security, good governance and recruitment and management of volunteers. As a small charity each trustee needs to be prepared to accept responsibility for some day to day operational matters.

    Before you apply

    Any applicant will be informally interviewed by at least two of our Trustees and, if mutually agreed, attend the next Executive meeting. Should the Executive agree, the applicant will then be co-opted onto the Executive for ratification at the next AGM
