The Role and the Department

The Department and role purpose

The Admissions Assistant Manager will provide support to the Admissions Manager in the management and organisation of the day to day operation of admissions, ensuring a high-quality, strategically-aligned and timely admissions service to all current and prospective students, their advisers and University staff. This varied role requires the exercise of independent judgement and initiative, strong administrative and technical skills as well as excellent interpersonal and management skills. The role also involves providing information, advice and guidance and developing positive working relationships with other staff within the Recruitment and Admissions Office, across the wider University, and beyond. A commitment to maximising personal and team effectiveness and the principles of equality and diversity is essential.


Recruitment and Admissions Services

Based in the Global Division, Recruitment and Admissions Services brings together a number of teams providing services in events, enquiry management, CRM, data analysis and forecasting, projects and compliance and admissions. It provides an essential service to the University in ensuring its financial sustainability and in delivering student number growth and increasing diversity in line with strategic aims and targets. We are the public face of the University in UK schools and colleges, through our contact with prospects, enquirers and applicants across the world and through our events programme. The team includes a range of professionals from a number of specialisms including administrators, decision makers, data analysts and forecasters, IT specialists, designers and marketers, events managers and recruiters.

Occasional weekend/evening working will be required. This is to attend external events and assist with tasks such as open days, recruitment events and undergraduate confirmation. Staff leave is not permitted during the week that A Level results are published (that date in 2023 is week commencing 14 August) and on occasional days through the year when major recruitment events are delivered, such as open days.

Your application should cover the following criteria:

Essential Criteria

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Strong digital competence with demonstrable skills in using core digital tools including internet, email, digital communication tools, and Microsoft 365 applications
  • Five GCSE’s at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent experience).
  • Post-16 qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of personal development to maintain skills.
  • Experience of providing advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.
  • Experienced service provider with knowledge and expertise used to contribute to the delivery and development of services, events and activities within the organisation.
  • Experience of implementing policy and procedures and involvement with future changes for a service area.
  • Ability to effectively network and exchange advice and information for development purposes.
  • Experience of supervising/managing a team and/or a line management qualification.
  • Ability to make criteria-based decisions and to think critically and with sound judgement
  • Knowledgeable and experienced Higher Education admissions service provider using knowledge and expertise to contribute to the delivery and development of services, events and activities within the organisation
  • Experience of the ability to build and maintain multi-functional relationships and confidently influence others to deliver policy and process to meet targets.
  • Ability to undertake research, create and evaluate proposals, and make reasoned recommendations based on informed consideration of relevant information, with high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, plan projects, manage conflicting priorities and demands, and meet tight deadlines, including successfully setting, managing, and meeting challenging targets.
  • An understanding of the legislative and compliance parameters that govern HE Admissions.

Desirable

  • Advanced IT skills including the use of Microsoft Office products (especially Word, Outlook, Excel and Access).
  • Knowledge of UK points-based immigration policy (specifically Tier 4)
  • Knowledge of regulations for assessing fee status
