The Role

Please note this role can be based in either London or Reigate, and will require flexibility from the successful candidate to travel between these locations as necessary.

We are looking for an experienced reserving actuary to join Willis Towers Watson as a consultant in our general insurance practice to help us further develop our market leading reserving practice and to contribute in adjacent areas.

You will deliver high quality work in line with agreed deadlines for our broad set of clients, working with our existing team of reserving specialist. You will have immediate exposure to client assignments which will draw on your imagination and creativity as well as your ability to analyse data, apply your insurance market experience, draw conclusions and present model results. You will be expected to manage projects from conception through to delivery, including leading the day to day client communications and managing junior colleagues working on the projects. You will also work with our team of data and analytics specialists to develop and enhance our offering in this area.

You will have the opportunity to work with our team of pricing, portfolio management, underwriting, finance and claims experts as part of our broader offering to clients. These experiences will help build on your technical and overall industry knowledge.

Your main responsibilities will be as follows:

Clients

  • Undertaking substantial workstreams in large reserving projects, across a variety of London Market, commercial and/or personal lines of business, and providing day-to-day input to projects, working with project leaders to understand overall priorities.
  • Participating in regular interaction with clients, including leading day-to-day client communication and taking a substantial role in client meetings.
  • Producing reports / communications with a client focus and working to provide solutions for senior project leaders.
  • Designing and/or implementing efficient reserving processes and effective methodologies on new and existing client engagements.
  • Working simultaneously on a range of client projects / internal responsibilities and managing deadlines and priorities appropriately.
  • To build a market profile as a representative and advocate of Willis Towers Watson reserving consulting services and technology solutions.
  • Develop a trusted advisor relationship with client contacts through effective communication and efficient, quality execution of client work.
  • Interface with colleagues from other practices and regions on assignments that reflect the client’s broader business issues.
  • Demonstrate commitment to Willis Towers Watson professional standards in managing analyses and in communications with clients.

Thought leadership

  • Developing a profile within UK, European or global initiatives, working to support the delivery of commercially important work streams, including advanced analytics and reserving process transformation.
  • Recognising the importance of intellectual capital, working with others to prioritise this appropriately and proactively identifying innovation opportunities.
  • Develop new relevant propositions or enhance existing reserving propositions, leveraging Willis Towers Watson’s toolset and broader intellectual property and resources.
  • Financial and business development
  • Meet goals for billable hours, sales revenue and intellectual capital development.
  • Develop and present proposals to potential clients, demonstrating the value of the company’s offerings.
  • Use contacts within current network to obtain introductions to new contacts; work to develop supporters for company’s products and services.

People

  • Leveraging knowledge through training, development and mentoring of other colleagues.
  • Collaborating with a wide variety of people within the organisation in order to ensure best solutions to client needs, including with Reserving, Pricing and Capital colleagues from our EMEA, Asia Pacific, and US offices.
  • Demonstrate natural ease and effectiveness when dealing with clients/colleagues at all levels.
  • Manage teams of one or more junior associates to effectively deliver client projects on time and on budget.
  • Serve as line manager or mentor to more junior colleagues.

The Requirements

Essential

  • Qualified actuary
  • Non-life insurance background, with extensive reserving experience
  • Strong knowledge of London Market with relevant experience in a reserving role at an insurance firm
  • Experience of reserving across multiple lines of business or a deep expertise in a particular line or area of the market
  • An interest and aptitude for data analytics and developing new ideas and techniques
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills, the ability to work collaboratively with fellow colleagues, experience of delegating to junior colleagues and enjoyment taken in training and/or mentoring junior staff
  • Ability to write client deliverables/reports in a clear, concise and appropriate style
  • Proven communication and project management skills
  • Proactive, energetic, and can demonstrate being a “safe pair of hands”
  • Self-starter attitude and ability to work within ambiguity
  • The ability to see the "big picture”, leveraging the resources of related practices to address clients’ business challenges
  • Competent Microsoft Excel user

Desirable

  • Strong working knowledge of commercial and personal lines insurance and reserving techniques
  • Experience of using ResQ, our market leading reserving software
  • Experience of reserve process and transformations of those processes
  • Experience of PowerBI, Microsoft Access, VBA, SAS, R and/or SQL
  • Experience of Unify, DataValidator and/or other WTW software products
  • Availability to travel on an as needed basis, domestically and internationally
