Trust Doctor in Trauma and Orthopaedics (ST3 Equivalent)

Fixed term contract: 6 months Feb - July 2023

Applications are invited for the post of Trust Doctor (ST3 Equivalent) in Trauma and Orthopaedics at The Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust. This is a non research role, however there is an opportunity to move into a research role when it becomes available. This one full time post has a focus on the trauma experience and will be from February to July 2023

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is based across three sites, with the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro being the main DGH, with two further hospitals, St Michael’s Hospital in Hayle and West Cornwall Hospital, in Penzance. The Trauma service is delivered at the Royal Cornwall Hospital and Orthopaedic Elective Surgery is undertaken at both the Royal Cornwall Hospital and St Michael’s Hospital.

The hospital has a 56 bedded Trauma Unit, for both trauma admissions as well as a Trauma Assessment Unit. The Trust runs 18 trauma operating lists per week on the Royal Cornwall Hospital site and a further 15 elective lists at St Michael’s Hospital in Hayle per week.

Main duties of the job

Trauma and Orthopaedics undertake approximately 5,500 elective operations per year, treats circa 2,700 trauma patients and sees approximately 13,700 new out-patients and 32,000 follow-up patients. Activity peaks during the summer months as a result of the significant influx of tourists, with a regional reputation for a varied and interesting elective and trauma caseload. The unit also has a higher than an average number of fractured neck of femur cases.

The unit has a good reputation for supporting its non-training grade doctors and many of our previous Trust Doctors and Clinical Fellows have gone on to successfully apply for specialty training posts. There is regular departmental teaching and the unit has strong links with the Research Department and is involved with a number of national multi centre studies with the opportunities for junior doctor involvement.

You will need to be fully registered with the General Medical Council. Applications are encouraged from those unable to work full-time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

We may be able to offer on-site accommodation and discuss rent and relocation fees together with study time for research and development. Why not contact us and see what our Trust has to offer you.
