About the Role:

Can we design a place, where our friends, families and neighbours, can thrive? What if we can?

Working at the heart of a flexible team of international experts all dedicated to growing and sharing their expertise and working on projects that transform the spaces where we live. We are looking for people with the ability to make a difference, pro-actively manage requirements and risks and influence others to deliver successfully. Candidates must have excellent communication and problem solving skills along with experience relevant to transport planning or design.

With increasing client workload and to maintain our lead as technical specialists, we are looking to expand our Network Analysis, Design and Signals team in Leeds which is currently 17 people across a range of grades from Apprentice to Associate Director. This team works collaboratively with others across the whole of the UK, providing specialist input into multidisciplinary projects. Our public sector transport work includes a broad range of exciting, flagship schemes regionally that provide significant scope for career and professional development.

We exist to future proof our cities and environments.

A dynamic opportunity to develop a unique offering based around focused delivery of schemes to improve transport networks for all modes. Our growing team delivers diverse interventions, providing a full design process ‘one-stop shop’ from early issue identification and optioneering, to modelling and concept design through to detailed design and site implementation while providing inputs to business cases, masterplans and transport assessments. We are a traffic signal / modelling center of excellence but require individuals across the full technical spectrum whether they be signal / modelling specialists or design / project management generalists, or both! You would have the ability to shape your role within this broad and exciting team. You will also contribute to developing our team and work winning through your client relationships. Set within the context of an expanding regional business, the role will empower you to develop in areas of growth potential.

In addition to project delivery this role will be client facing and support business development; as such excellent communication and writing skills together with an understanding of commercial principles will be needed. As minimum you would manage discrete workstreams, and depending on your experience manage full projects and a small team with the opportunity to progress rapidly to winning, leading and delivering your own projects.

You will be joining a fast growing and creative team, working on projects in the northern region, across the UK and internationally. Whatever your interest and current technical focus, there is something here for you. You will be supported in proactively developing your technical and business skills as an integral part of your role, to help you develop your career at a pace that suits you.

A flexible approach to working arrangements is offered as a benefit to team members, with many of our team currently working mostly from home and collaborating with colleagues across locations. Additional opportunities for diverse project work exist in various WSP and client locations.

A typical week would include:

  • Managing discrete workstreams as ‘Workorder Manager’ under the guidance of the Project Manager (with the opportunity for additional commercial responsibility depending on experience and appetite)
  • Supporting a Project Manager or experienced team member with Client facing meetings
  • Drafting and designing traffic and transport schemes for public and private sector in AutoCAD, in line with relevant design guidance
  • Finalising and issuing drawings (in AutoCad and GIS), following WSP QA standards
  • Preparing and using local junction or microsimulation models
  • Obtaining base information for a wide range of transport planning early stage projects and identifying constraints and opportunities leading to concept design and later design stages
  • Responding to requests for design information
  • Drafting technical notes or sections of reports
  • Communicating your knowledge of relevant Health, Safety and Environmental risks
  • Work closely and effectively with colleagues to maximise the benefit of your expertise, and the complementary technical knowledge within the team

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • A positive, can do approach with a genuine enthusiasm for solving problems, innovation and promoting sustainable transport infrastructure
  • An interest in developing your skills in designing people centred infrastructure
  • A strong collaborative ethos and excellent communication skills
  • Practical experience of working with others on development and/or highway engineering schemes
  • Strong Analytical skills with creativity in thinking and problem solving
  • Either Good working knowledge of CAD drafting and drawing issue procedures and an ability to train others in CAD standards, drafting and design practice
  • ORExperience of modelling using models such as TRANSYT, LINSIG, VISSIM, AIMSUN or PC-MOVA
  • ORExperience of identifying issues, constraints and opportunities based on desktop research and site observations and producing early stage design working with other technical specialists
  • A focus on health and safety in the designs you prepare
  • Ability to contribute to technical reports as the technical expert would be beneficial

The day-to-day role contributes to a sub-team of the wider Leeds Transport team providing design support to the wider business. This would include responding to quick turn-around requests for design information, producing and issuing CAD drawings and contributing to H&S risk management processes.
