What’s involved with this role:
To be a key member of the Council’s structural engineering design function as part of the Design & Construction Management section within a continually improving centre of excellence. The Assistant Structural Engineer will make a full contribution towards the Structural Group being a successful and viable unit within Design & Construction Management. Key Responsibilities:
  • To provide a full range of structural engineering services in accordance with the Council’s QA procedures.
  • To contribute towards the Structural Group being a successful and viable unit within Design & Construction Management.
  • Delivery of projects within time and within budget.
  • Liaise with and oversee the appointment of external consultants / partners.
  • Carry out surveys and prepare structural reports on Council owned properties, including social housing.
  • When required deputise for the Structural Manager representing the structural section on both of the Council’s working groups, firstly providing advice on structural safety and policies concerning the ‘Safety of Sports Grounds Act’ and on secondly the Council’s Events Liaison Panel providing advice on structural safety at ‘Outdoor Events’.
  • Carry out structural safety inspections on events at sports grounds and at outdoor events.
  • Check submissions and provide advice to Building Control.
  • Inspect and advise on dangerous structures. (The buildings could have become dangerous for a number of reasons from structural movement, fires, explosions or damaged by vehicles).
  • Develop and promote sustainability in design.

  • Qualifications:
    • Degree in Civil Engineering.
    • Trained in CDM 2015 regulations.
  • Knowledge & Experience:
    • Detailed knowledge of a variety of construction methods.
    • Detailed knowledge of structural Codes of Practice and British Standards and Euro Codes.
    • Knowledge of AutoCAD/Revit.
    • Significant post qualification experience.
    • Significant experience in producing tender packages on schemes which are either to be procured on a ‘detailed design’ basis or procured on a ‘design and build’ basis (i.e. employers requirements/specification documents).
  • Abilities:
    • Ability to prepare structural reports on properties and give details of the repair options to the client.
    • Ability to meet programme targets. Monitoring project progress, procedures and costs.
    • Ability to communicate well with clients and construction professionals.
    • Must be able to prioritise projects and multi task.
    • Must be able to cope with a high workload and tight deadlines. These deadlines are often conflicting, competing and subject to change at short notice.
  • Enthusiastic, committed.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages
  • Other Requirements: Full valid driving licence and daytime us of a motor vehicle.
