Your Part In The Team

A Shell Energy Retail Technical Programme Manager (TPM) will lead large complex initiatives of all types through every stage of development, from idea to design to completion. The primary role of a TPgM is to lead software development teams, product managers, business stakeholders and designers in initiative delivery and report to stakeholders at all levels in the organisation. They work across architecture, product development, project management, stakeholder management and are extremely effective communicators. It is crucial that they have excellent commercial acumen and financial understanding in order to maximise the value of teams around them and articulate the value delivery to the business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Solve problems and manage program progress: Ensuring effective delivery through leveraging technology, people and developing new processes
  • Identifying and correcting gaps in our technical systems and having a keen eye for emerging business and IT trends
  • Financial acumen: Experience in forecasting and tracking project/ initiative spend and assessing the value delivery of key initiatives
  • Experience in building commercial plans and pitching to senior stakeholders in order to secure investment
  • Total and detailed understanding of the SERL business strategy and will work at all times to ensure digital platform are working towards delivering it
  • Constantly working to ensure initiatives are delivering the outcomes required
  • Ability to collaborate and influence teams across BTG and the rest of the business at all levels.
  • Able to influence peers and management in decision making, prioritisation and funding decisions, strong stakeholder management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, presentation skills, and verbal / written communication skills; ability to lead discussions, present ideas to audiences of all sizes, and interact with all levels of the organisation
  • Intellectual curiosity and the ability to question thought partners across functional areas
  • Development of new propositions and services: Aligning technology strategy, business imperatives, coordination across stakeholders and delivery partners
  • Key interface between IT and the Business in delivering solutions developed by internal teams and 3rd party suppliers
  • Strong analytical skills; Can handle, synthesize and analyse large data sets, draw out and then communicate insights through concise, written documents
  • Help determine appropriate solutions to clearly defined problems
  • Understand and articulate any change impacts from an E2E Perspective.
  • Highly detail-orientated professional with strong leadership skills who know how to turn ideas into products and services.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities initiatives, deliverables, and stakeholders
  • Self-starter; adaptable to change; motivated to set personal and program goals and proactively track performance against goals and initiatives objectives
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively;
  • A thirst to learn new skills;
  • Excellent understanding of business complexity and project interdependencies

Most complex part of the role?

As a technical programme manager, there is an expectation that he or she will not just be able to synergise expectations and also bridge the gap between products, architecture and engineering functions and usher in the necessary change and transformation to be inline with our OKRs. This requires a detailed understanding of the enterprise strategy, existing organisational dynamics and an ability to articulate the required/ necessary change drivers to raise urgency, build the appropriate alliances to generate outcomes for the business. The individual has therefore to be able to break any silos, carry along and live up to expectations from a variety of stakeholders - from engineering, product management as well as the wider leadership team. In doing so, a right mix of focus on data and personal empathy is necessary to build relationships on the basis of honesty, integrity and respect.

To Be Successful In The Role You Must Have
  • Experience of driving change and familiarity with well established change and organisational methodologies is highly desired
  • Experience of using software development methodologies, technical architecture development and product deployment strategies is mandatory to be able to form an opinion on the technical dependencies
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, and the capability to handle multiple projects and initiatives at once with the appropriate mix of responsibility delegation and accountability is highly desirable
The ability to alter communications approaches depending on the audience is a key requirement too
