Brief overview of the role
Our teaching assistant apprenticeship programme will teach many different skills. This will allow you to work within schools to support classroom delivery.
Monday - Friday (Shifts TBC)
Total hours per week: 35.00
Apprenticeship salary:
£5.50 for ages between 16-18
£6.50ph for ages 18+
Vacancy description
The role of a teaching assistant is to provide support for pupils, teachers, and other staff in order to:
- Raise standards of achievement for all pupils
- Encourage pupils to become more independent learners
- Provide support for their emotional, social, and physical welfare
- Support the inclusion of pupils in all aspects of school life
- Work under the direction of the line manager, class teachers, and other staff to support the learning of whole classes, selected groups or individuals as instructed
- Study relevant qualifications while you earn
- Supervising class activities
- Assisting with young people’s learning experience
- Helping students who might need extra support
- Attending relevant academy meetings as required
- Respecting confidentiality at all times
- Participating in the performance and development review process, taking personal responsibility for identification of learning, development and training opportunities in discussion with line manager
- Promote positive pupil behaviour in line with academy policies and help keep pupils on task
- Interact with, and support pupils, according to individual needs and skills
- To support learning by arranging/providing resources for lessons/activities under the direction of the teacher
- Demonstrate a positive commitment to equality and diversity
Desired skills
- Suggest alternative ways of helping children if they are unable to understand.
- Describe in simple terms the progress of behaviour management with children
- Identify gaps in their own experience that they need help in filling
- Assist children on an individual basis, in small group and whole class work to achieve and learn
- Explain tasks simply and clearly and foster independence
- Accept and respond to authority and supervision
Personal qualities
- Enthusiastic, and have an interest in working with children
- A team player
- Reliable, committed, and punctual
- Professional, organised, and attention to detail
- Previous experience of working with children desirable, but not essential
- Confidence in your own ability to want to learn and develop
Desired qualifications
- 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-4 (or equivalent), including English and maths.
Future prospects
- Potential of full-time employment upon completion.
Things to consider
- All apprenticeships require an Enhanced DBS check before the commencement of the role due to working with children.
- Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard, which includes:
- Level 3 Technical Certificate
- Level 2 Functional Skills in maths or English if required
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)
- This training programme focuses on developing classroom delivery and work within schools.
- The qualification aims to grow your existing skillset in the following key areas:
- Increased mastery of the critical stages of child and adolescent development
- Enhance understanding of the types of influences that can affect this development
- Become fully adept in supporting teachers with the planning of activities, as well as creating own activity plans
- Evaluation of personal performance in relation to supporting literacy, numeracy, and ICT
- Amplify knowledge of safeguarding, and emergency procedures
- Understand legislation with regard to confidentiality, data protection, and information sharing
All candidates take part in an initial intense training programme at the start of the selection process. During this period our experienced staff will prepare candidates for their placements by giving them the foundations that they will need for securing a placement. Our employability team will also be available to support with interview skills ready for a placement interview.
