We are looking for Classroom support for children’s learning in small groups and 1-1 support for pupils with additional needs as required. The apprentice with also do half an hour per day lunchtime supervisor role, supervising outdoor play during the school lunch hour.

As a Teaching Assistant you are in a unique position within the school. First and foremost you will work to ensure the realisation of the vision of our School. Your post is a developing and changing one and you will have many responsibilities and much will be expected of you. In return you have the right to expect support from the Head, Leadership Team, Teachers and the Governing Body.

You are expected to support the education and well-being of children (aged 4-7) in the school, having due regard to its aims, the school curriculum and the policies of the Governing Body. Additionally you should share in the corporate responsibility for the safeguarding, well-being, assessment and discipline of all pupils in line with the school’s policies on behaviour and health and safety.

Specific Responsibilities:

To work under the instruction and guidance of your line manager and designated class teacher to undertake work/care/support programs, to enable access to learning for pupils and to assist the teacher in the management of pupils and the classroom. Work may be carried out in the classroom or outside the main teaching area.

Support For Pupils:

  • Supervise and provide particular support for pupils, including those with special needs and EAL, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities
  • Attend to the personal needs of pupils and implement related personal programs to ensure that school’s health, safety and behaviour policies are maintained
  • Support pupils in the learning environment in order to promote independence, inclusion, acceptance and equality of access to learning opportunities for all pupils
  • Assist pupils, individually or in small groups (and sometimes outside the main classroom) in the understanding and completion of pre-defined learning activities to meet the requirements of pupils and the curriculum
  • Establish constructive relationships with all pupils and interact with them according to individual needs
  • Encourage all pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher
  • Set challenging and demanding expectations, with the guidance of the class teacher, and promote self-esteem and independence

Support For Teachers:

  • Prepare and maintain the pre-defined learning resources and work environment for specific learning activities to meet the needs of pupils and the curriculum
  • Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support pupils to achieve lesson objectives and success criteria
  • Observe, be aware of and report on pupil problems, progress and achievements to the teacher to contribute to the gathering of information for the completion of pupil profiles and records of attainment to maximise pupil development
  • Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with parents/carers and colleagues
  • Gather and report information to and from parents/carers as appropriate to meet service delivery requirements
  • Provide clerical/admin support e.g. photocopying, filing, registers etc.

Support For The Curriculum:

  • Undertake structured and agreed learning activities/teaching programs
  • Undertake programs linked to local and national learning strategies, e.g., phonics programs, maths, EAL and gather information on progress and feed back to the teacher
  • Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use
  • Prepare and maintain the pre-defined learning resources and work environment for specific learning activities to meet the needs of pupils and the curriculum

Support For The School:

  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
  • Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
  • Appreciate and support the roles of other professionals
  • Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required
  • Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development to support the achievement of individual and team performance and development objectives
  • Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including at break times
  • Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required and take responsibility for a group under the supervision of a teacher
  • Maintain an awareness of the importance of the appropriate use of resources to minimise waste and maximise the effectiveness of financial resources
