The Economics & Business Department is one of the largest Departments in St Charles Catholic Sixth Form with over 400 students and 9 members of staff who all teach on a variety of courses. All teachers within the department have degrees or postgraduate qualifications in Economics or Business. Many have industrial experience, which ranges from Retail Management to running their own business. The Department is a high performing subject area with positive outcomes for students at all levels.

The classrooms are well equipped with IT provision and most are clustered in the same teaching blocks. The staff in the subject area, work well together, collaborating on teaching and learning projects, coming up with innovative ways of educating and inspiring motivation in our students to build a thirst for knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

The A Level & BTEC courses on offer are very popular and in response to the A level reforms the department has decided to follow the Edexcel specification for all Business & Economic courses, which allows the students to apply business and economic theory in both microeconomics and macroeconomics, to real world areas such as; the Sugar Tax, the National Living Wage, Impact of Wages on Employee Productivity and staff motivation, Brexit and the implications of Covid 19 on global commerce and markets.

The department encourages students to broaden their understanding of the subject through debate, workshops and involving them in competitions. Last academic year, trips were arranged to go and see speakers at top London Universities and to successful local firms such as Innocent smoothies.

Students will also be familiar with resources online such as Econ & Vox podcasts, Visual Capitalist, Econplusdal, Businessed, &Tutor2u. They are encouraged to read around the course through use of The Economist, Guardian, FT, Business Today, Economics Today and investigate Economists and Entrepreneurs such as, Mark Zuckerberg, Sophi Tranchell, Tim Harford, Yanis Varoufakis, Ha Joon Chang. Furthermore, we ask them to develop their understanding of the performance of firms in various industries such as; Amazon & Google in the Technology industry, GSK in the Pharmaceutical industry and Volkswagen & Toyota in car manufacturing, Lidl, Costco & Tesco PLC in the retail industry, and Shell & Exxon Mobil in the oil industry.

The department works closely with several leading universities such as LSE, Goldsmiths and Royal Holloway who offer our students workshops and summer internships to develop higher order skills and application of Business & Economic theories to real world events.

In addition, students will often take part in cross college and departmental activities like West London Citizens, Google Demo Night and the Young Enterprise award which aim to give students the skills required to take initiative in their local communities and encouraging economic and social change.

As a strong enthusiastic team that is fully committed to maximising student potential, we are seeking to appoint a like-minded professional team player, who can contribute fully to the ongoing success of the department.

We try to match teaching timetables to the successful applicant’s particular areas of expertise and experience. Given the range of curriculum offer within the department, however, flexibility and commitment to comprehensive provision is important.
