Main duties of the job

Examination, investigation, diagnosis, treatment, and discharge of patients.

Independent and supervised outpatient clinics including an emergency eye clinic

Perform laser and minor operative procedures.

Participation in 1 in 6 on-call rotas.

Supervision as required of junior medical staff during working hours in the department.

Involvement in Clinical Audit, teaching, and research. Additional duties as may be required within the grade of a temporary or permanent nature.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of Ophthalmology.
  • To share with colleagues the responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Ophthalmology Department.
  • Teaching and training of junior staff, and opportunity to teach medical students within the Peninsula Medical School.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • To attend meetings as appropriate.
  • Fulfil duties of the weekly timetable including any out-of-hours responsibilities and the current on-call commitment of 1 in 6.

  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCOphth or equivalent

  • Experience in cataract Surgery
  • Clinical experience in cornea and vitreoretinal
  • Surgical experience in Cornea and vitreoretina
  • Teaching (medical students, peers, MDT).
Disposition

Essential
  • Flexible in approach and able to adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Able to work collaboratively with peers, MDT.
