Job SummaryDESCRIPTION
Ring is looking for a Software Development Engineer to join the team that supports and develops the technology for our popular streaming features such as Live View, to connect customers to their Ring video doorbells and security cameras. Our goal is to ensure a fast and reliable streaming and playback experience, alongside building solutions and supporting products that help Ring on its mission to make neighbourhoods safer.
Key job responsibilities
You will be working on mission-critical services, supporting and inventing across a wide range of the tech stack. Challenges include improving fault tolerance for the real time streaming stack, streaming protocol improvements, service efficiency optimisation, and ensuring world-wide availability for a global service in a robust manner. You will be part of a global organisation, and become part of a team that has full-service ownership to make decisions on how technical solutions are delivered. With customers across the globe and traffic at scale, you’ll have the opportunity to have impact and put your mark on a global service.
A day in the life
This role provides an opportunity to play an integral role in the customer experience, owning key components of Ring’s central back end system. Whether it is expanding on protocols, setting up fast orchestration systems, post-processing events, providing error correction for clients, or making sure that the deployments across a global scale is performant, the team works backwards from the customer to deliver a continuously positive experience.
About The Team
As a team working on core Ring services, we have a good sense of architecture, making sure that features that we deliver are able to be leveraged across a wider set of teams. We’re always looking to learn and innovate, making decisions for our customers. We are owners who generate ideas, follow through on implementation, ensure quality throughout the release process, and focus on the long term.
Basic Qualifications
- Experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems
- Non-internship professional software development experience
- Programming experience with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design
- Proficiency in Java/Kotlin or similar language
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field
- Experience with hands-on software development
- Excellent communication, collaboration, reporting and problem solving skills
- Experience working with distributed systems or applications
- Working experience with Cloud Computing (such as AWS) and infrastructure as code
- Knowledge of technologies such as WebRTC/SDP/SIP/RTP
- Knowledge of professional software engineering practices and best practices for the full software development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
- Strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive
- Sharp analytical and troubleshooting abilities
