Role And Responsibilities

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

As part of the UK Engineering team, the Software Systems Architect has a leading role in the definition of state-of-the-art software solutions. Drawing from CAE’s extensive products baseline but also from leading-edge products from the open market, the Software Systems Architect will design innovative software solutions that will meet challenging customers’ requirements.

Responsible for initial design and development of new software or extensive software revisions; products may be for use internally or externally. Defines product requirements and creates high level architectural specifications, ensuring feasibility, functionality and integration with existing systems/platforms. The Software Systems Architect is the link between the technology and the Customer, Business Development and Project execution.

This person will be the key team member driving technology and innovation for the UK organisation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead the software design activities and act as the overall design authority during the Proposal and Design phases of the project.
  • Define “how” the software architecture can be structured to best comply with the Customer Requirements.
  • Perform trade studies to identify optimal solutions, including the extent of re-use of existing equipment and designs, new design and third-party elements.
  • Maintain and sustain close working relationship between CAE UK and other CAE geographical entities to promote the reuse of core products and technologies.
  • Establish the project software architecture and its mapping onto the physical components.
  • Analyse the system to ensure that it will meet the stated performance requirements.
  • Identify risk and cost driving design issues, seeking original solutions that will minimize risk while optimizing costs.
  • Peer review design work products with the other members of the project team.
  • Support Business Development / Capture team in the application of technical solutions for potential business.
  • Liaise with suppliers during the bid and the project phase to ensure that CAE is getting the correct/optimal/compliant solution at a competitive price.
  • Writing and support of technical proposals.
  • With guidance where required, lead customer/supplier demonstrations/presentations.
  • Analyse internal development process and make recommendations for changes.
  • Supporting the Engineering Group Leader in leading new product development and research and development projects.
  • Any other duties as may be required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Essential:
  • Bachelor or Masters Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • Significant work experience in a technical related field.
  • Good working knowledge of real-time software solutions preferably obtained within the defence and security domain.
  • Experience of providing system engineering inputs into Bids & Proposals documents.
  • Experience with .NET framework.
  • Experience with C++ and C#.
  • Familiarity with full life cycle agile methodologies to take opportunities to continually improve software development.
  • Good working knowledge of latest advance in Software development process.
  • Excellent planning, leadership, communications, organisational, coordination, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and time constraints.
  • Solid appreciation of simulation.
  • Experience as a team lead, or ability to lead a team.

Desirable:
  • Experience in the Simulation domain.
  • Experience of working with Cloud based technologies.
  • Experience working with service-based architectures.
  • Experience with HTML, HTML5, CSS, XML, XSLT, and JSON.
  • Experience with networking standard like DDS, ZeroMQ, DIS and HLA.
  • Experience with Visual Graphics – OpenGL, WebGL or Direct3D.
  • Experience as an UI Developer.
  • Experience as an AI, and Computer Generated Forces (CGF) Developer.
  • Experience using Relational Database Management Systems such as MySQL, SQL Server, and/or Oracle.
  • Experience as a SCRUM Master.

  • In this role, CAE’s Remote Work Policy offers the possibility for an employee to work remotely on a regular basis.
  • Some activities will require travel in the UK & abroad and require overtime & occasional weekend working.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain or transfer Security Clearance which the Company sponsors (applicants must have lived continuously in the UK for the past 5 years in order to obtain security clearance) or currently holds NATO SC level Security Clearance that can be transferred from overseas to the UK.
