In 2025, the National Railway Museum celebrates 50 years of being open to the public. To commemorate these momentous occasion, the Vision 2025 Masterplan seeks to deliver a programme of upgrades to both the National Railway Museum in York and sister museum, Locomotion, at Shildon.

Our programme is made up of a series of projects with an overall budget of £60.7 million and is known as the Vision 2025 Masterplan. This coincides with the transformation of the underused land around the museum in York by the York Central Partnership, aiming to power York’s economy into the future.

About the role

We are looking for a Clerk of Works to join the Estate team across our sites in York and Shildon. As a client-side representative working in the best interests of the Museums, you will play a key role in overseeing standards and performance of Masterplan, Estates Capital and Maintenance projects.

Supporting our Vision 2025 Masterplan programme, alongside major capital renewal and maintenance activity, you will lead a cohesive approach to delivery and help optimise outcomes.

Ensuring that projects are delivered to the agreed drawings, specification and schedule, you will also coordinate site logistics and access whilst liaising with relevant stakeholders. Along with site inspections, you will manage contractors ensuring that they are compliant, whilst reviewing RAMS and permits for work. You will also advise internal colleagues on standards, guidance and legislation.

About You

You have experience at craft or technician level in construction or civil engineering and experience in a Site Manager, Clerk of Works or site supervisory role. Naturally leading with a health and safety focus, you are able to manage major building works and other minor projects, with experience of undertaking surveys, audits and site testing and a sound knowledge of non-domestic building works in live environments.

With great interpersonal, spoken and written communication skills, you have strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to effectively work across a wide range of colleagues and professionals.
