UHI West Highland and UHI Outer Hebrides are two of Scotland’s leading colleges and partners in the University of the Highlands and the Islands who head the way in tertiary education. Would you like to support our executive leadership teams in all aspects of the financial leadership and operational management?

We are seeking a Shared Senior Financial Controller to be based in Stornoway and provide line and operational management for the Finance Resource of UHI Outer Hebrides, as well as to UHI West Highland on a remote basis. The split of resource over the two colleges will be agreed from the outset to enable the effective management of workload and expectations.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to UHI West Highland’s and UHI Outer Hebrides’ successful expansion at a senior executive level, whilst living and working in one of the most breathtakingly beautiful and naturally wild landscapes in the UK, with all the benefits of this position being located in the Outer Hebrides. We strive to have transformational impact on the development and prospects of this region, its people, and its communities, contributing directly to the sustainable economic, social, and cultural life of our area and to be an inspiration for all those who want to live, learn, and work in such an outstanding place. We know we make a difference. We would like you to join us to help us build capacity to go further yet.

Reporting to the Shared Director of Finance & Resource, the Shared Senior Financial Controller will be responsible for:

  • the operational effectiveness of the finance systems and procedures, ensuring all internally and externally reporting requirements are met and all deadlines and operational milestones are met, to effectively support the strategic and operational priorities of the College
  • Ensuring costs are managed and accurately reported
  • Assisting with the development and management of annual college budgets and accounts
  • Ensuring effective leadership and management of staff teams delegated to the post holder
  • Ensuring that the KPIs as set out in the Annual Business Plans for key areas of responsibility are met or exceeded
  • Engagement with all internal and external stakeholders and professional advisory groups as deemed appropriate by the Shared Director of Finance & Resources

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level and be a fully qualified accountant with significant experience of financial management in a complex corporate environment.

This is a key leadership and management role within the colleges. The post holder has a major interface with external partners and agencies but also works collaboratively with internal teams across multiple locations, other managers and many other colleges staff on finance, facilities and budget related matters and initiatives. Evidence of excellent leadership, communication, and management skills, as well as proven approach to developing effective teams are key to this role.
