The role

The Centre for Academic Language and Development is positioned within the Faculty of Arts, but prepares international students to progress to undergraduate and postgraduate courses across the university through the International Foundation Programme (IFP) and Pre-sessional courses. The post-holder will be part of a team of Senior Tutors in the Faculty of Arts with responsibility for leading and coordinating the provision of high-quality personal tutoring, academic advice, complex case work, and professional student support. The appointee will work closely with the Engagement and Progression team in the Centre to support IFP and Pre-sessional students but will also contribute to initiatives and support across the wider Faculty and will be part of the university’s Senior Tutor network.

What will you be doing?

You will be the primary source of expertise for both staff and students on how to approach a range of issues relating to students’ academic progress, study support, and engagement needs.

You will be a senior point of contact for students wishing to discuss a range of complex pastoral and academic issues affecting their studies. When specialist support is required, you will be the key interface between the academic staff in the Centre, the Faculty, and central support services, such as the Student Wellbeing Service, ensuring appropriate communication and actions.

You will work closely with other Senior Tutors to develop and enhance appropriate student support mechanisms and academic processes within the Centre and across the Faculty. You will contribute to the development of materials to support areas such as inclusive teaching and assessment, personal tutoring, academic transition, study skills, transferable skills and employability in the students’ subject areas, working alongside programme leaders and central careers and study skills teams.

You should apply if

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with substantial relevant professional experience in working with students in a post-16 environment and who has a track record of supporting international students. The opportunity will particularly interest individuals committed to integrated academic and pastoral support as well as inclusive teaching and assessment. The role would be suited to an individual looking to balance complex case work with wider responsibility for the delivery and development of an excellent student learning experience.

Please note that you will be expected to start this role in September 2023.
