In view of long-term forward workload prospects, we are seeking to recruit a Senior Transport Planner with an Active Travel background to join our Transport Planning team in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

Our workload has a strong focus on sustainable mobility solutions including active travel initiatives. We provide advice to public and private sector clients on a range of related matters, from developing strategic plans for active travel infrastructure, to designing schemes that encourage walking and cycling and leading on community engagement activity.

We are seeking someone at Senior Transport Planner level to both manage and provide technical input on a variety of exciting projects, strengthening and broadening our technical offering, and actively supporting the development of more junior colleagues.


A typical week would include:

  • Delivering and evaluating active travel and sustainable mobility projects. These will vary in both scale and nature, making for a varied workload and being active on multiple projects at any given time;
  • Assisting with developing proposals and bids for future work;
  • Project management of smaller projects and collaborative team working on larger projects;
  • Day to day management of direct reports;
  • Helping train and mentor the annual intake of new graduates and apprentices into the team.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • A relevant Degree (Geography, Civil Engineering, Town Planning etc);
  • An MSc in Transport Planning or similar (desirable);
  • Experience as a Transport Planner or Senior Transport Planner with solid post graduate experience and ideally having achieved chartered status in a transport related discipline ;
  • Experience in supervising other team members;
  • Solid written and verbal communication/presentation skills and the confidence to speak to other members of project teams and liaise with local authorities and discuss various project issues and discuss ideas with non-technical stakeholders;
  • Technical competence sufficient to mentor others and share knowledge;
  • Understanding of contemporary active travel policy and scheme design guidance, and being able to convert that understanding into practical solutions for our clients;
  • Experience of working to time and budget constraints;
  • Experience of management responsibilities e.g. line management or supervision of junior staff on projects.

Candidates will have technical competencies that include experience in:

  • Developing strategic plans for active travel infrastructure, such as LCWIPs
  • Planning and forecasting tools, such as PCT and CyIPT
  • GIS tools and analysis (desirable)
  • Active travel route auditing (desirable)
  • Developing active travel scheme concept designs (desirable)
  • Undertaking scheme appraisal and developing supporting business cases (desirable)
  • Stakeholder engagement and communication activities;
