About the job

Summary

Senior Surveillance and Investigator operatives are able to successfully lead a team to deliver proactive operations utilising the full spectrum of tools and techniques available to covert investigation specialists. The NCA is at the forefront of law enforcement in the UK, protecting the public from the most serious criminal threats by disrupting or bringing to justice those serious and organised criminals who present the highest risk to our communities.

Job description

Our Senior Surveillance and Investigator Operatives are highly skilled, dedicated and tenacious investigators.

NCA officers respond to a broad range of threats including Organised Immigration Crime, Human Trafficking, Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, Firearms and Drugs amongst others in a varied and dynamic environment and undertake a critical role identifying intelligence and evidential opportunities in support of Investigation leads.

If you are applying for roles within the Investigations locations you will be required to lead a skilled team of officers who are capable of deploying as accredited surveillance officers but who will also be required to gather evidence and undertake a range of investigative roles in support of ongoing investigations. The role will require you to understand and consider a range of covert tactics, to supervise the delivery of those techniques and where appropriate to supervise the evidential capture and delivery of case related functions; such as statements, evidence handling and disclosure.

It is a challenging role requiring a flexible approach to working long and varied hours, often at short notice, operating from locations within England & Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

It is an essential requirement for successful candidates to pass a five day Officer Safety Training course (OST). Applicants are urged to give consideration to whether this is achievable prior to applying. The OST combines cognitive input, armed and unarmed defence theory and practical techniques and, as such, requires a level of physical exertion due to the nature and repetition of the drills. The practical techniques include use of body weapons, movement and positioning, strikes (armed/unarmed) blocks, restraint and control. We will expect officers attending the course to have a standard of physical fitness. Progressive full body warm-ups are conducted each day to minimize risk of injury to the officer. It is expected that the officer is capable of a ground descent and ascent, unaided and within a reasonable timeframe. This is important both individually and in team tactics. Candidates must pass the OST during the first 6 months of starting in the Investigator role. Failure to do so would mean you would not be able to continue in the operational Investigator role and your employment with the NCA will end. Barring any exceptional circumstances the NCA would not seek to find you an alternative role within the agency. An officer who passes the OST will still be required to successfully pass their 12 month probation period to ensure continued employment with the NCA.

***All NCA officers must hold SC Enhanced upon entry as a minimum. To meet the National Security Vetting requirements for this role you will need to have resided in the UK for a minimum of 3 out of the past 5 years. For more information please see the Candidate information Pack***

  • Candidates will bring with them a full range of previous surveillance experience in either law enforcement, military or other government agency roles.

  • Candidates will have a range of surveillance qualifications, with some being specialists in technical, rural and/or motorcyclist surveillance.

  • The officers will deploy to undertake a range of surveillance deployments in support of NCA operations across England, Wales, Scotland and NI.

  • Candidates will be required to gain PIP 2 supervisor and supervise a team to investigate serious and organised crime and make operational decisions on Investigations.
