Business Unit description

Digital and Data

The Digital and Data business unit defines and delivers the digital products and services used by students, providers, advisers, and commercial partners, as well as the underlying technology platforms that enable these products to be developed in a responsive and agile way.

Through the development and support of our underpinning data platform the business unit ensures that our data is curated and made available for use both by our analytical reporting and our data products and insights teams.

Working in multi-disciplinary teams comprising customer insight, product managers, architects, developers, testers and data scientists, the Digital and Data business unit ensures that UCAS is a customer centric, product-focused digital business, connecting students with their next opportunity.

About the role

We are now recruiting for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Commercial Products Team.

You will be part of defining and building the products and underlying technology platforms that enable us to continuously develop in an innovative and agile way to ensure we get value to our customers quickly.

What products will I be working on?

Digital Identification Service – UCAS’ system allowing providers (Financial organisations, Retailers etc) to valid student status of study for offering Student focused products.

Virtual Events – UCAS’ online event system supporting choices for higher education.

UCAS Media – Develop and support new commercial product offerings.

What Tech stack will I be using?

  • SQL Databases (e.g. Oracle, PostgreSQL)
  • AWS (S3, Lambda, RDS, EC2, API Gateway)
  • C# .Net Cor

DevOps tools

  • Splunk
  • Bamboo
  • New relic
  • Terraform

Key Accountabilities:

  • Contributing to solution design and prototypes, collaborating with Architecture and Platform teams.
  • Communicating with various technical and non-technical stakeholders, for example, the Technical Team Lead, Product Owner, Solution Architect, and the development teams.
  • Coaching and mentoring less experienced members within a team.
  • Ensuring the smooth running of our production environment and deployments, using advanced automated testing skills.
  • Helping to define and deliver our development process workflow.

Skills, qualifications, and experience

  • Understand Agile ways of working
  • At least 5 years’ experience developing C#.NET enterprise applications.
  • Working understanding of serverless technology.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases.
  • Strong knowledge of rest APIs and integration via APIs, software design patterns.
  • Experience of automated test frameworks, mocking/stubbing, and xUnit/Munit.
  • Awareness of Angular (or similar JavaScript Frameworks) advantageous but not essential.
  • Understanding of DevOps is desired
