The Team:

We are a globally distributed team of 40+ engineers striving to deliver delightful customer experiences. Join us at Rakuten and you can take ownership of new product features supporting our Fortune 500 clients and content publishers. Our tools power various e-commerce and social media experiences. In fact, you have probably used our technology whether you know it or not!

While we are building tools, we are also incorporating time into our schedules to make sure we’re still learning and growing. This includes accessing various learning platforms paid for by Rakuten, as well as working with your squad or the greater team to share knowledge. We prefer to promote from within so if you’re interested in working towards a more senior individual contributor or people manager role, we’ll plan for that.

The Role:

We’re looking for an experienced full-stack engineer with professional experience working on complex projects who is interested in serving as a technical lead for project(s). You’ll consistently report to one engineering manager for on-going support and mentorship. However, different squads are formed throughout the year to work on different projects, enabling you to work on one or more projects each year depending on need. We’ll also try to match your skills, experiences, and interests to find the right fit. The projects we work on generally meet at least one of the descriptions listed below.

Example projects:
  • Contribute to our custom UI/UX component library
  • Create dazzling data visualizations for our reporting platform
  • Secure our systems by improving our authentication platform
  • Define authorization mechanisms for UIs and APIs (RBAC, ABAC, .etc.)
  • Collaborate with data science and data engineering teams to develop search APIs
  • Connect our content creating publishers with advertisers through features in our dashboards
  • Explore new uses of Google Cloud Platform
  • Add features to our Developer Portal
  • Tune the performance of our API Gateway
  • Upgrade a system to leverage our new CI/CD pipeline
Key Responsibilities

Partner with UI/UX designers to create the right workflow for our users Collaborate with your squad of engineers, a project manager, and a product manager to design, document, and deliver features Help us modernize our systems with new technology and strategies Suggest ways to improve efficiency, performance, and maintainability Document and diagram our systems and workflows Participate in and/or facilitate training e.g., tech talks, workshops, pair programming Deploy your code to production via our CI/CD system Work with our customer support team to triage issues

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities)
  • Collaborative and supportive. You have experience working in a team, asking questions, sharing knowledge, and problem solving together.
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills. You can invite anyone into a technical conversation. Your documentation is as beautiful as the features you ship. Your code reviews are clear but kind.
  • Experience building web applications. You may be stronger on either the UI or API side but you know what it takes to put a fullstack application on the internet.
  • You have a history of translating complex requirements into a shippable product
  • SQL: Professional experience with any relational database
  • Tests: Professional experience writing automated tests, unit, integration, e2e, .etc.
Nice To Have:
  • Experience writing API’s or background jobs with Golang
  • Experience scaling consumer facing APIs
  • Experience with React
  • Experience optimizing Single Page Applications
Qualification Requirements
  • At least 5 years of professional experience as a software engineer
Location

Seattle or NYC. A hybrid remote schedule that works for you is also possible.
