The Post


The postholder will report directly to the Head of Estate Development within the Estates & Campus Services Directorate and will be directly involved with the management and delivery of a challenging programme of capital development and lifecycle maintenance projects up to £10m. This will include the co-ordination and management of both internal and external property professionals, throughout the project life cycle from feasibility stage through to implementation, handover and use. The post holder shall take the lead and co-ordinate project requirements, briefing and activities with key stakeholders and client groups across the University community.

The successful applicant will be responsible for providing a professional, efficient, and customer-focused project management service ensuring that projects are delivered within the exact time, cost and quality parameters. They will be expected to manage complex multi-disciplinary activities and communicate with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.

The University is undertaking an extensive capital development programme which will transform our campus and provide excellence in the delivery of our learning, teaching and research. Our capital investment programme will deliver the latest technology enabled environments and be designed to support and enhance collaborative engagement at local, national and international levels. In addition, the University’s commitment to net zero carbon will see a range of projects to enhance existing building fabric, improve campus wide mechanical and electrical infrastructure and improve the estate’s overall environmental performance.

The successful candidate will be an experienced project manager who can demonstrate delivery of a number of concurrent projects within occupied buildings in a safe and efficient manner. The candidate will have experience in managing projects ranging from minor to larger capital works together with a working knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems within a large estate.

Essential Criteria


The successful applicant will possess excellent interpersonal skills including written and oral communication, negotiation and collaboration, have the ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and have a confident approach when dealing with an extensive list of stakeholders both internal and external.

Qualifications

  • First degree and relevant building related professional qualification (RICS, CIOB, RIBA, CIBSE etc.) or significant and demonstrable relevant experience of client-side project management

Knowledge & Experience

  • Extensive relevant experience managing minor works and multi-million pound new build and refurbishment projects
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of current construction procurement practices and construction contracts
  • Experience of developing project implementation plans and programmes
  • Experience of leading and managing multi-disciplined design and project teams
  • Experience of dealing with construction contractors
  • Experience of the financial planning and management of complex multi-faceted construction projects
  • Experience of managing budgets associated with capital projects
  • Knowledge of appropriate legislative requirements related to construction projects
  • Experience of managing multiple stakeholders across complex projects
  • High level of proficiency with the MS Office and MS Project, in particular Excel
  • Experience of AutoCAD
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to produce clear, well-structured and concise reports
  • Ability to present with confidence and clarity to stakeholder groups and Project Boards

Skills & Attributes

  • Knowledge of appropriate legislative requirements related to construction projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to produce clear, well-structured and concise reports
  • Experience of managing construction projects within the Higher Education sector or similar
  • Knowledge of environmental sustainability issues related to construction projects including BREEAM and LEAD assessment methodologies
  • Knowledge of Public Sector procurement procedures
  • Knowledge of managing asbestos containing materials in the context of construction projects
  • Excellent knowledge of the Construction, Design and Management Regulations 2015
  • Full Driving License

The Estates & Campus Services directorate comprises three main areas - Property Management, Facilities and Safety, Environment & Continuity and has responsibility for the longer-term development, maintenance and day to day operation of the buildings and grounds which support and add value to the core activities of the University.
