An opportunity has arisen for an experienced PROGRESS/OpenEdge Developer to join our dynamic and well established development team at Winterflood Securities.

The successful candidate will be a highly self motivated and proactive problem solver seeking to further their software development career in the financial services industry. Different entry points are possible, depending on skills/experience.

As well as being a technologist, the successful candidate will have excellent analytical and communication skills as you will be required to work closely with a wide variety of internal user groups throughout all aspects of the development lifecycle. Stakeholder demand and business visibility is high so you need to be delivery focused and able to handle a fast paced and dynamic environment.

This challenging and extremely rewarding role would suit a self-motivated innovative individual, with a passion for software development and evolutionary technologies. Experience or an interest in the financial services sector is beneficial but not essential.

The core systems are written in PROGRESS ABL, and run on distributed, replicated high performance blade technology. Satellite systems which support this are written in the most appropriate language for the specific task, and include C#, C++, Java, Python, PHP etc. Cross-language development opportunities are abundant for motivated individuals

RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Senior Developer, you will be required to:

  • Analyse business user requirements at an early stage of the development lifecycle
  • Design software enhancements to meet business user requirements
  • Produce maintainable software components that operate as part of large multi-tier and multi-process system(s)
  • Unit test deliverables to verify behaviour and resilience
  • Produce suitable functional and technical documentation
  • Communicate changes to peers and implementation analysts through reviews and training sessions
  • Implement changes into production and provide suitable support
  • Participate in multiple projects while meeting tight deadlines

In addition, you will have the opportunity to feed ideas into strategic discussions e.g. around product direction and performance

ESSENTIAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

  • Professional PROGRESS experience in both event driven GUI and batch development
  • Experience of development on Linux/Unix with communication protocols e.g. TCP/IP
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Previous experience in a similar client facing development role

Experience in the following areas would be a distinct advantage:

  • Computer science degree or equivalent
  • Professional knowledge of another programming language (Java, C++, Go, PHP, Python, C#) and an interest in the development of complex and high performing trading and settlement systems
  • Familiarity with multi-threaded parallel processing systems
  • Knowledge/experience of financial/accounting systems
  • Knowledge of financial markets, especially within the Equity and Fixed income asset classes
  • Previous experience in a similar client facing development role, within the financial markets sector
  • Extensive exposure to the full development life-cycle
  • Experience of working in a highly regulated environment
  • Production use of FIX 4.0 or above
  • Messaging software – e.g. Sonic, and/or AMQ/Artemis
  • High volume real time message/transaction handling
  • Real time interactive data display
  • Linux/UNIX scripting
  • Software security
  • PROGRESS Developer Studio for OpenEdge
  • PROGRESS database administration
