About the Role:

A dynamic opportunity to develop a unique offering based around focussed delivery of schemes to improve transport networks for all modes. Our growing team delivers diverse interventions, providing a full design process ‘one-stop shop’ from early issue identification and optioneering, to modelling and concept design through to detailed design and site implementation while providing inputs to business cases, masterplans and transport assessments. We are a traffic signal / modelling centre of excellence but require individuals across the full technical spectrum whether they be signal / modelling specialists or design / project management generalists, or both! You would have the ability to shape your role within this broad and exciting team. You will also contribute to developing our team and work winning through your client relationships. Set within the context of an expanding regional business, the role will empower you to develop in areas of growth potential.

In addition to project delivery this role will be client facing and support business development; as such excellent communication and writing skills together with an understanding of commercial principles will be needed. As minimum you would manage discrete workstreams, and depending on your experience manage full projects and a small team with the opportunity to progress rapidly to winning, leading and delivering your own projects.

A typical week would include:

  • To deliver transport projects which require knowledge and understanding of traffic signal design and operation, as part of a flexible team to suit the requirements of each project. Applying relevant design documents, guidance and procedures
  • Managing discrete technical workstreams as ‘Workorder Manager’ under the guidance of the Project Manager and / or managing full Projects and project teams
  • Play an active role and contribute to our Traffic Signal Operation Expertise Practice Group, to make best use of combined skills and experience, contributing to overall professional development, effective project delivery and minimisation of project risk. Through this, contribute to developing our innovative, industry leading technical offer which delivers benefit to transport users whilst protecting the environment and reducing carbon emissions.
  • Leading and / or working as part of a team to apply relevant industry recognised design software to traffic signal designs, including AutoCAD and relevant traffic modelling
  • To work closely and effectively with colleagues at all levels and across disciplines to maximise the benefit to WSP clients of your understanding of traffic signals and traffic modelling, and the complementary technical knowledge within the team
  • To work as part of our Traffic Signals Team to proactively develop new opportunities and solutions based on excellent technical understanding so that WSP remains at the forefront of thinking and respond to the changing challenges of providing sustainable mobility
  • To provide appropriate input to enable the team to meet a variety of client requirements including submission of business cases, planning applications including transport assessments, scheme drawings at preliminary or detailed design, transport policies and strategies
  • To provide specialist documentation appropriate to your own skills, which might include traffic modelling reports and controller specifications and undertake specialist activities including testing and commissioning traffic signals and related systems

This role will include contributing to projects across sectors and geographies (with potential international opportunities) for both public and private sector clients, so a dynamic approach to work including the ability to deal with a diverse workload and prioritise tasks and projects accordingly is desirable.

You will liaise with clients and across teams, actively contributing to the delivery of both technical and commercial excellence, meeting budget, programme and technical standards and meet QA, CDM and HSE requirements.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • You will have knowledge, experience and expertise relevant to Traffic Signal design, modelling and operation with a genuine enthusiasm for solving problems, innovation and promoting sustainable transport infrastructure
  • Experience in working with, modelling or developing MOVA or SCOOT / UTC / UTMC systems, and in implementation of traffic control systems including factory and site acceptance tests and validation of operation is desirable.
  • Experience of leading workstreams and / or project teams to budget and programme.is desirable.
  • Awareness of and commitment to achieving the highest levels of Health and Safety in designs and all aspects of work is a core requirement.
  • Strong Analytical skills with creativity in thinking and problem solving will contribute to effective performance – you will be highly numerate and able to draw key issues from documents and drawings. We expect you to be familiar with relevant software and able to rapidly learn and use a range of specialist software packages and systems.
  • Experience and understanding of traffic modelling using TRANSYT / LINSIG / VISSIM / Paramics / PC MOVA is desirable, as is capability in using AutoCAD and KeySignals to produce and check high quality traffic signal drawings.
  • You should understand the wider context in which traffic signal control operates, from policy and legal as well as technical viewpoints. You will interpret and clarify client requirements so that appropriate solutions are developed, and appropriately explained to clients, colleagues and co professionals.
  • You will communicate clearly and concisely, being able to convey complex issues and communicate persuasively. You will produce high quality documentation and reports tailored to requirements, with clear justification of conclusions.
  • You will be educated to degree level or have equivalent experience, with relevant professional qualification or higher degree and membership of professional bodies being desirable, alongside ability to learn and develop new skills rapidly in response to diverse project requirements.

With increasing client workload and to maintain our lead as technical specialists, we are looking to expand our Network Analysis, Design and Signals team in Leeds which is currently 17 people across a range of grades from Apprentice to Associate Director.

This team works collaboratively with others across the whole of the UK, providing specialist input into multidisciplinary projects. Our public sector transport experience includes strategic advisory relationships with many of the devolved regional funding bodies and their partner scheme promoters, ensuring our involvement in opportunities emerging from devolution and a broad range of exciting, flagship schemes regionally that provide significant scope for career and professional development.
