About The Opportunity

We wish to recruit enthusiastic scientists to join our Radioactive Waste Management Consultancy Team. The successful candidates will focus on modelling work to support fundamental understanding of performance challenges for radioactive waste and/or the clear communication of such work in the support of safety arguments. This may include the need to liaise with stakeholders and records holders to ensure that appropriate evidence is available to support safety arguments. The post offers the opportunity to apply skills to solving real world problems for our customers, and supporting them with the communication of this knowledge. The vacancy provides an excellent opportunity for those wishing to develop their careers in our technically and commercially challenging business. The work is part of a wider programme within decommissioning and waste management and candidates should expert to provide support and insight to a range of diverse projects.

Key Responsibilities

Work on a range of consultancy projects for customers including radioactive waste producers, radioactive waste management organisations and regulators, both in the UK and overseas. Work could be to support a variety of activities where safety justifications are underpinned by modelling/analysis and accompanying expertise of safety justifications in highly regulated environments. Areas of expertise could include, but not be limited to
  • Criticality safety calculations and/or arguments for fissile materials at any stage of a disposal lifecycle, including long timescales for geological disposal. This could include compliance requirements for records in support of assumptions or parameters employed, for example.
  • Thermal modelling of radioactive waste under storage, transport or disposal conditions.
  • Performance assessments for radioactive materials within transport or disposal containers, including under accident conditions. Familiarity with the regulatory requirements for transport of radioactive materials or the operation of nuclear facilities would be valued.

In all such areas, or similar, the ability to critically challenge or review the work of others is welcomed.

Key Responsibilities Will Also Include
  • Production of high quality technical reports or presentations on the outcome of your work, tailored to the requirements of a range of stakeholders, as appropriate.
  • Supporting the production of robust, quality assured, inputs to models and the post-processing of results.
  • Interactions with, and presentation of, results to customers.
  • Supporting other team members with business development activities in driving growth
  • Delivering work to agreed timescales, excellent quality and cost.

  • Numerate with excellent attention to detail in modelling and data handling.
  • Experience in relevant modelling software.
  • Excellent and demonstrable technical writing skills.
  • Flexible, innovative, keen to develop skills and apply knowledge widely to real-world problems.
  • Adaptable, able to work on a number of varied projects at the same time, prioritising as appropriate.
  • Able to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Will need to be able to obtain appropriate security clearance.
  • Experience or understanding of the nuclear industry, including the regulatory requirements that apply.
  • A good first degree (21 or better) or higher degree in a physical science, mathematics or engineering discipline OR equivalent training/experience.
  • Experience of mentoring development staff would be beneficial
