Senior Lecturer – Teaching and Research
Cardiff School of Engineering
As part of the strategic development of the School of Engineering, we currently have 1 position available for a Senior Lecturer with expertise in engineering design (including product design) and engineering management.
Applications are sought from candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing strengths within the High-value Manufacturing group at the Cardiff School of Engineering. We are interested in applicants whose work will strengthen ongoing partnerships with related disciplines, and foster new research collaborations both within the university and beyond.
The successful applicant for this post will undertake research in related areas of engineering design and engineering management, with research expertise focusing on, but not limited to, AI and machine learning for engineering design, advanced computational design, design for smart products, engineering management with a focus on design innovation, design for digital and smart manufacturing systems, design for human-centric manufacturing, and so on.
The successful applicant will be assigned to teach modules related to engineering design, engineering management and manufacturing systems on postgraduate and undergraduate degree programmes offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Cardiff School of Engineering, and will be expected to develop new modules when required. Supervision of both undergraduate and postgraduate students and projects is essential.
The position is full-time and open-ended.
Salary:
Senior Lecturer - £53,353 - £61,823 per annum (Grade 8 Teaching and Research)
The level of the appointment made will be dependent on the relevant experience of the candidate.

- To conduct research within engineering design, product design and engineering management and contribute to the overall internationally recognised research performance of the School and its Research Institutes by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in international academic journals, international conferences and/or other research outputs, and the recruitment and supervision of research staff, lecturers and postgraduate research students
- To contribute to and/or lead successful bids for funding
- To give invited addresses to professional meetings and conferences at national and international level, building networks to develop research outputs and standing within the area of specialism to participate in School research activities
- To contribute fully to the management of postgraduate research
Teaching
- To lead on degree and module development and delivery and contribute to the pedagogy of subject area
- To act as programme manager, module leader and / or tutor – ensuring delivery of teaching in line with current curricular requirements, developing and applying innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students
- To undertake work associated with examinations, such as setting and marking assessments and providing student feedback
- To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students, including supervising the work of Undergraduate and Master’s students, the co-supervision of PGR’s and acting as a PGR progress review panel member as required
Leadership
- To provide academic leadership by co-ordinating the work of others to ensure areas of research/degree courses are organised and delivered effectively
- To be involved in the departmental level strategic planning and contribute to wider strategic planning processes in the University
Other
- To undertake and lead operational administrative responsibilities as requested by Head of School and senior management team, and contribute to and/or lead bids for consultancy and additional funds
- To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally and internationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. Qualifications and Education
1. Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience
2. Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or experience
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
3. A well established expertise and significant proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within the following research fields:
5. Established national and growing international reputation within academic field
6. Proven substantial record of high quality publications in national and international journals and/or other research outputs.
