The Senior Highways Engineer joining the team will carry out highway scheme identification, study work and prepare detailed designs for maintenance and improvement schemes. You will be required to manage/mentor other staff in the highways design team and stand in for the Team Leader whenever necessary.

Other elements of the role will involve will include the need to design and deliver cost effective, buildable and technically sound design solutions for Highways schemes in accordance with the forward programme. You will contribute to the successful delivery of the programme of work by designing, developing and overseeing sound design solutions to meet client requirements within budget and timescale, following Kier processes and procedures as well as any client specific requirements. Carrying out the checking and certifying of design deliverables (including drawings specifications, certificates, reports and contract documents), and authorising where appropriate

The new team member will be developing, designing and reviewing solutions in accordance to National design standards, procedures and requirements and any specific parameters.You will be ensuring compliance with Kier’s Safety, Health and Environmental Management System (SHEMS) requirements. You will review and approve design calculations, drawings and tender/contract documents.

Production or overseeing of scheme documents, including BoQs and reports in accordance with the relevant contract. Ensure suitable site investigations are undertaken as part of design, including a focus on ensuring there are no clashes with buried services.Making sure an environment assessment is undertaken and then acting on its findings. Completing CEMP and WMP documentation.

An important element will be to work with Kier and HE Management / Project Management teams to ensure scheme designs and works are delivered on time and to budget, delivering best value for Highways England, this is including the preparation of design cost estimates and budget control including the preparation and issue of early warnings and quotations

What are we looking for?
  • Degree/Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Civil Engineering or equivalent with appropriate experience to be able to undertake the role
  • C Eng/I Eng with appropriate Institution (ICE, CIHT, RGS, CIWEM) desirable or working towards achieving this
  • Demonstrable broad in-depth experience in inspection, assessment, design and construction of highway assets
  • Knowledge of design using DMRB and other Highways England standards
  • Leading and managing technical compliance checks for project team outputs
  • Previous experience supervising staff
  • Detailed understanding of health and safety management and the requirements of CDM
  • Hold CSCS card qualification
  • Full UK driving license
