Our Integrated Combat Systems Business

Integrated Combat Systems is part of BAE Systems Submarines. We predominantly supply to the UK MoD but with smaller derivative work done in support of international Customers. Our team is responsible for system design, build and/or procurement of the major electronic and mechanical systems on a submarine, as well as provision of test, integration and support services.

Innovation is central to our DNA and has produced the Common Combat System (CCS) to address the customer’s affordability, technology and capability challenges. It is based on commercial off-the-shelf technology (COTS) coupled with bespoke military hardware and software and is being progressively rolled-out into the UK’s Submarine flotilla.

We effectively incorporate rapidly evolving, commercial technology, new capabilities and changes coming from the operational environment into long-term build, maintenance and in-service programmes.

As a ’system of systems’ integrator we work closely with our Customer, partners and suppliers to develop and provide innovative, intelligent and value for money solutions across all classes of UK Submarine both in build and in service with the Royal Navy, ensuring our submariners always have world-class, safe, capable and available products.

Senior Engineer (Sonar)

Would you like to play a key role in the design, implementation and management of some of the most integral Submarine systems, working at the very forefront of modern technology? We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Engineer (Sonar). This role can be based out of one of the following site locations: Frimley, Bristol, Portsmouth or Weymouth, with opportunities to work from home some of the time.

As a Senior Engineer you will be working as part of the Underwater Systems (UWS) Outboard Engineering Team across all phases of the engineering lifecycle on the design, build and integration of the latest Sonar Systems on UK submarine platforms.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to develop your career within a defence company that is constantly growing its already well-established UK and international presence. We can provide on- the-job and formal training to develop your skills, as well as providing support towards obtaining Chartered Status in the future.

Your main responsibilities as a Senior Engineer (Sonar) will involve:

Being the technical point of contact for the management of a key Dreadnought Sonar subsystem. It is anticipated the successful candidate will aspire to progress to Technical Lead position in due course.

Technical management of Submarine Sonar Suppliers

Technical engagement with Shipbuilder and other Combat Systems engineering teams

These Include

Responsibility for the management and progression of engineering activities associated with the delivery of the Sonar subsystem into the Dreadnought Programme as well as its installation and testing on the submarine.
  • Product maturity management including engineering meetings & system design reviews
  • Working with Suppliers in the development of qualification and test strategies
  • Verification and validation of system design ahead of production
  • Requirements management and acceptance
  • Working with multiple stakeholders to resolve engineering issues.
  • Managing acceptance of delivered equipment
  • Provision of technical support to Project Manager & Commercial functions as required
Your Skills And Qualifications
  • Degree level qualification in an engineering-related field, or equivalent
  • Engineering background.
  • Mechanical engineering experience would be advantageous but not essential.

You will have a good level of enthusiasm and communication skills, with the ability to liaise with different stakeholder groups at all levels. It is important that you are a team player but are also able to work without supervision at times.
