As a Data Operations Engineer you will develop, deliver and support a number of data related products and services. These will meet customer needs and will be completed within pre-agreed timescales. You will ensure the stability, robustness and resilience of products and services while implementing changes where necessary. In addition, you will maintain and support the continuous improvement of Data Operations standards and engage with stakeholders at all relevant points.

Responsibilities

You will participate in the build and development of a wide range of data collections within the COLLECT system. This will involve:
  • Transforming business/customer requirements and specifications into robust data products and services.
  • Bespoke collection functionality (including reference data).
  • XSD build and test for data collections.
  • XSLT validation build and test for data collections.
  • Supporting Data Operations colleagues with the running, maintenance and monitoring of live services.
Test activity is also vital part of our work and this will involve responsibility for:
  • Test plan development for data collections.
  • The completion of peer and go-live testing.
  • Final testing sign-off prior to live deployment.
A Range Of Additional Tasks Involving
  • The completion of a range of Excel based products and templates.
  • IT problem solving i.e. incident management and security investigations.
  • Participating in projects involving the replacement of legacy IT systems.
  • Contributing to best practice across the Data Directorate community.
  • Resolving and mitigating operational risks and issues.
  • Producing comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Ensuring systems and procedures adhere to security protocols.
This will be achieved while creating and maintaining documentation, adhering to processes and procedures, monitoring infrastructure and applications services and taking appropriate action where necessary.

It is essential that you have the following skills and experience:

Working Practices
  • An understanding of data storage and transfer technologies (e.g. SQL, Azure, XML, XSD) including the build and live support of DfE data collections.
  • Experience of performance and quality monitoring.
  • Contribute to investigative work regarding IT incidents and seek solutions.
Database Administration Services
  • Understanding of relational database and data warehousing principles.
  • Experience of Database Administration services (i.e. Access DB).
Communication skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with an ability to work effectively in a team environment. Experience of working across multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Translating technical concepts into non-technical language with appropriate communication for internal and external stakeholders.
Incident and Problem Management.
  • Effective personal planning and analytical skills that ensure an ability to proactively identify issues and register incidents. This will follow information gathering and investigate work around processes, services and relevant systems.
Ownership and Initiative.
  • Resolve issues promptly and successfully by following processes and procedures that enable problem resolution. This includes the implementation of mitigating actions to prevent recurrence.
User Focus
  • Consult users/stakeholders to collate user needs while using quantitative and qualitative data to define outcomes.
It is desirable that you have the following skills and experience:
  • Experience of XSLT
  • Experience of VBA
  • Experience of working in Azure DevOps.
  • Experience of working in Agile project environments.
  • Data Pipeline operation i.e. Data Pipeline and Data Sharing ETL production, optimisation and transformation commissioning.
  • Awareness and high-level understanding of business process modelling, ETL concepts and requirements definitions.
Although Data Ingestion Team roles are predominantly centred around the outlined essential requirements, we are expected to move in a direction where staff will need to learn the technology and skills described as desirable at some point in the future.

Desirable criteria will only be assessed in the event of a tie break situation to make an informed decision.
