Our Integrated Combat Systems Business

Integrated Combat Systems is part of BAE Systems Submarines. We predominantly supply to the UK MoD but with smaller derivative work done in support of international Customers. Our team is responsible for system design, build and/or procurement of the major electronic and mechanical systems on a submarine, as well as provision of test, integration and support services.

Innovation is central to our DNA and has produced the Common Combat System (CCS) to address the customer’s affordability, technology and capability challenges. It is based on commercial off-the-shelf technology (COTS) coupled with bespoke military hardware and software and is being progressively rolledout into the UK’s Submarine flotilla.

We effectively incorporate rapidly evolving, commercial technology, new capabilities and changes coming from the operational environment into long-term build, maintenance and in-service programmes.

As a ’system of systems’ integrator we work closely with our Customer, partners and suppliers to develop and provide innovative, intelligent and value for money solutions across all classes of UK Submarine both in build and in service with the Royal Navy, ensuring our submariners always have world-class, safe, capable and available products.

Senior Consultant Engineer - People/Functional Capability

As a Senior Consultant Engineer within the combat systems engineering function, you will be and experienced manager or leader, and will work in collaboration with Integrated Combat System engineering management and their teams to deliver a continually improving SQEP functionality for the overall benefit of the Submarines business.

You will be leading a team of experienced engineers to support and improve the capability of the engineering delivery teams who develop the heart of the submarine, the Combat System.

For the right candidate, training can be offered in some areas to support career development and achievement of Chartered Engineer status as recognised by The Engineering Council.

Your main responsibilities as a Senior Consultant Engineer
  • Providing leadership to Combat System engineering discipline subject matter experts in the assessment, development and deployment of improved policies processes and work instructions.
  • Maintenance of high levels of engineering capability within the Combat Systems engineering function.
  • Assessing and reacting to the SQEP functional capability based on future needs of the business.
  • Establishing appropriate and effective measures of engineering delivery performance.
  • Collation and provision of engineering function metrics to support strategic decision making.
  • Supporting the recruitment and deployment of staff in concert with department heads and line managers.
  • Ensuring the development of engineers by recommending both appropriate functional training and career development options.
  • Ensuring consistent ways of working across programmes within the engineering function.
  • Ensuring that the requirements for engineering systems and tools are clearly defined in support of functional needs.
  • Liaison with stakeholders within the programme delivery framework to address and resolve engineering, process and governance issues.
  • Identifying and implementing performance improvements to Integrated Combat System programme engineering delivery.
Your Skills And Qualifications
  • You will be an experienced manager or leader with an engineering background leading teams to analyse, improve, implement and measure improvements to policies, processes and work instructions.
  • You’ll have an excellent understanding of the system development lifecycle, preferably in the defence industry, against the standard ’V-model’ from requirement definition to customer acceptance.
  • You’ll have a degree level qualification in relevant STEM subject (Engineering/ Physics/ Maths/ Science) or equivalent industry experience.
