At Monzo we’re aiming to build the best current account in the world . We are always keen to hear from capable, creative engineers who want to help us accomplish that goal ????

You’ll help us with the following questions and challenges:
  • Building out our security engineering platform to enable teams across Monzo to create secure products and systems by default.
  • Thinking innovatively about how we can leverage our platform to build truly cutting-edge, useful tools that detect and remediate threats.
  • Building brand new features and automation for our in-house Security products, including our centralised Identity & Access, Detection & Response and Authentication & Authorisation platforms.
Here are some of the projects the team have worked on in the past:
  • Building our secret management platform
  • Building the ability to detect and stop phishing attacks by scanning ~9 million domains per day.
  • Building fine-grained permissions and multi-party authentication into our API platform.
  • Building a bespoke Security Information & Event Management product that processes millions of events per minute, enabling our Security Operations team to investigate alerts accurately and efficiently.
At Monzo, you’ll get to learn and work with a lot of exciting new technologies, including:
  • Go to write our backend microservices;
  • React , Apollo and SCSS Modules to create engaging user interfaces;
  • Cassandra and Keyspaces for most persistent data storage;
  • Kafka for our asynchronous message queue;
  • Elasticsearch for storing and analysing events;
  • Kubernetes to schedule and run our services (Chris, our Technical Director of Platform and Reliability and Suhail, a Staff Engineer in our Platform Collective gave a great talk recently at re:Invent sharing an overview of our platform )
The role

You’ll Be Responsible For
  • Developing innovative new security-focused products and controls, both from the ground up and through integrating with existing parts of our platform.
  • Architecting our authentication and authorisation platform to power systems across Monzo.
  • Designing and maintaining our Strong Customer Authentication implementation.
  • Thinking like an attacker to develop our detection capabilities.
  • Building innovative new systems to enable staff to work securely from anywhere.
  • Working closely with software engineers and security experts across our other Security squads on a daily basis, such as Security Infrastructure, Information Security and our Security Operations Centre.
Monzo’s security team has a wide range of responsibilities. As a bank, we are solving diverse, novel problems to ensure that our customers and their data are secure.

One of the guiding principles of security at Monzo is that security at the expense of user experience is a last resort. We aim to move mountains in the background so that we can build world-class features without compromising on security.

As a Senior Backend Engineer in Security, you’ll work directly with lots of teams across the company, and we run regular knowledge-sharing sessions so you’ll learn heaps about everything; from how banks work to effective communication and the technologies we use.

You should apply if
  • You have significant experience as an Individual Contributor in software engineering; leading on systems design and crafting clean, secure and scalable solutions to the most complex problems.
  • You have worked extensively on the backend of technology products, and are comfortable building highly performant microservices with a strongly-typed language (Go, Java, C, Scala, etc).
  • You have a deep interest in an area such as API Security, Web Security, Authentication or Detection, and you’re capable of enhancing our existing and building out new capabilities.
  • You’re constantly looking for flaws in systems and can reason about how best to address them.
  • You’re excited about and capable of building a security culture and mindset across our entire engineering community.
Logistics

We can help you relocate to London & we can sponsor visas.

This role can be based in our London office, but we’re open to distributed working (with ad hoc meetings in London once COVID is over).

We have payroll set up in three countries: the UK, and France. Right now, we can only hire people who work from those countries and we’ll keep this updated with new ones as we expand and are able to hire from more places ????

We offer flexible working hours and trust you to work enough hours to do your job well, at times that suit you and your team.

Diversity and inclusion is a priority for us – if we want to solve problems for people around the world, our team has to represent our customers. So we need to attract the best talent and create an environment that supports and includes them. You can read more about diversity and inclusion on our blog .

If you prefer to work part-time, we’ll make this happen whenever we can - whether this is to help you meet other commitments or strike a great work-life balance.

Our interview process is normally a phone interview, a coding task and call to discuss it, and 2-3 hours of onsite interviews that can be conducted via hangouts as well. We promise not to ask you any brain teasers or trick questions. We might design a system together on a whiteboard, the same way we often work together, but we won’t make you write code on one.
