Key Duties

Project management
  • Manage a University Innovation Institute, ensuring Institute objectives and operational plans are communicated and engaged with, plan, organise and delegate work as appropriate, monitor progress, intervening as required, and produce regular reports for the Pro Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Enterprise, as required.
  • Gather and analyse data to inform decisions, establishing basic trends and patterns in data and creating reports as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the long term strategic planning and management of the University Innovation Institute, interpreting the University’s research and innovation strategies into work priorities and setting the standards for the Institute
  • Contribute to the development of the University Innovation Institute initiatives that have a University wide impact
  • Manage and report the Institute’s budget allocation, including appropriate management of appointments, as agreed.
  • Project manage the development of large-scale funding opportunities from both internal and external funding sources
  • Plan and deliver projects and activities that have an institution wide impact, managing the operation of project teams as needed, planning, organising, and delegating work, monitoring progress and intervening as required.
Line management responsibilities
  • Manage performance, induction and development of individuals members of staff, as required and as appropriate
  • Work within matrix-teams of staff across the organisation to deliver enhanced solutions to the University, providing advice and guidance where necessary.
  • Support and guide team members in welfare issues, escalating as necessary to specialist support areas as appropriate.
Working with others
  • Work effectively with senior staff in RIS, the Pro Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Enterprise, College Deans of Research & Innovation, Directors of Strategic Entities, a broad range of academic staff and researchers plus professional services colleagues who manage University activities in relevant areas such as strategic partnerships, major bid development, the doctoral academy, strategic planning, skills and employability.
  • Develop and facilitate collaborations with businesses and organisations external to the University, as well as the University Innovation Institute’s linked strategic partnerships, aligned to the innovation remit of the Institute
  • Collaborate with others in order to drive cross-Institute collaboration, support translational research initiatives and drive development of educational activities (e.g., new DTEs / taught MScs / CPD).
  • Undertake the training of others in areas relating to the UII
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts to help improve service levels, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required
  • Support the establishment, co-ordination and delivery of the University Innovation Institute’s ECR network, as well as provision of co-ordinated support for early career researchers

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
  • Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the higher education sector, funding for research, development and innovation and relevant Government policy.
  • Proven experience in evaluating and improving processes, in developing new processes and procedures to deliver greater levels of success.
Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
  • Experience of managing people and resources, directly or in a matrix management model to deliver strategic outcomes.
  • Ability to communicate detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people; to influence senior decisions from a variety of stakeholders that have a strategic impact; finding a consensus way forward where there is discord.
  • Ability to develop internal and external networks in order to deliver strategic outcomes and sustainable benefit, including supporting effective engagement with funding organisations, academic staff and researchers and a range of third-party stakeholders.
Planning, Analysis and Problem solving
  • Evidence of solving significant problems independently using initiative and creativity.
  • Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered
  • Evidence of ability to undertake and deliver projects, establish and lead short term project teams in a professional context, including delivery of tasks to strict deadlines and budgets, and experience of consultation, liaison and negotiation.
  • Evidence of ability to plan work, reacting to changes in workload and strategic direction.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience and qualifications in formal project management.
  • Experience in setting and managing budgets.
  • Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
  • Fluency in Welsh, written and oral

Additional Information

The Security, Crime and Intelligence Innovation Institute (SCIII) is one of the new University Innovation Institutes (UIIs) focusing on large scale, highly interdisciplinary research, strongly aligned to the University’s major research and innovation strengths. UIIs will be expected to deliver major innovation-focused bids, helping drive increased research and development partnership working with external stakeholders.

Four new UIIIs, focused on Security, Crime and Intelligence; Neuroscience & Mental Health; Digital Transformation; Net Zero have been established. Their research is underpinned by external partnerships with government departments, Office for National Statistics, IBM, NHS, Takeda, Siemens, Hodge Foundation, the Waterloo Foundation, AstraZeneca, Cambridge Cognition, Renishaw PLC, P1vital, Ionis Pharmaceuticals and other key external stakeholders. The post holder will be required to undergo Security Clearance (SC) vetting organised by the Institute. To gain security clearance an applicant will normally need to have been a UK resident for a minimum of 5 years.
